Openings: Worlds on Fire (Grammy Show)

Art and music collided last night with the invite-only opening of the “Worlds on Fire” show (previewed) held at the Pacific Electric Lofts’ building in downtown LA.Â The week-long exhibit features portraits of 2009 Grammy nominees painted and interpreted by some of the top artists in the low brow and pop surrealist scene. Mark Dean Veca, who we just interviewed a couple days ago, opened up his show last night at the UAG gallery.Â We had only seen the nice in-progress setup previously, but the finished installation looks even more amazing.Â The show runs till March 15th, so stop by for a look if you have a chance.Â As mentioned before, he will also doing an “artist talk” on February 26th if you are interested in attending.Â We gathered some images for you to peruse after the jump.

Last night’s opening for “15 Years of New Image Art” (previewed here and here) reaffirmed why New Image Art is one of the primary driving forces in the alternative/low-brow/street art scene. The show was everything we thought it would be and more – great art, an energetic crowd, and non-stop entertainment. We got a chance to check out Gallery 1988’s (LA) Beastie Boys tribute show “Under the Influence,” and what a trip down memory lane! Almost 100 different artists created interpretations of their favorite “Beastie” moments from: Sabotage to Intergalactic, Brass Monkey to Sure Shot, Shake Your Rump to No Sleep Til’ Brooklyn, just to name a few. Openings: Know Hope @ Ad Hoc Art

Know Hope’s show (previewed) at Ad Hoc Art opened last weekend in NY to a pretty good crowd.Â As with most of his shows, the centerpiece was an installation, vividly bringing to life the imagery of his art.Â His well-known grappling and intertwined characters were again the stars in this body of work that seemed to have a seafaring theme.
