Interviews / Preview: Antony Micallef – “Becoming Animal” @ Lazarides London

One of London’s most anticipated shows of the year is almost upon us with Antony Micallef’s “Becoming Animal” opening this week at Lazarides gallery’s Rathbone Place location. We certainly got excited after seeing the new image of one of the show pieces he recently put on his website here – and it certainly seemed to fit with the dark tone he described to us. This is the first solo outing from Micallef since his sell out show in Los Angeles, “Impure Idols,” in 2007 where […]

Video: Blu & David Ellis – “COMBO” – a Collaborative Animation for Fame Festival 2009

Well, the wait is finally over. The much anticipated collaborative animation between Blu and David Ellis that we hinted about here and here is finally done. The patterns and colors of Ellis’ work blend really well with Blu’s more muted kinetic work. Props to these two artists for the creative camera work as well the time and effort this obviously required. This will go down as one of the top highlights for this years’ FAME Festival (coverage here) and is highly recommended. Via Unurth. Discuss […]

Streets: Banksy – “No Ball Games”

Another piece from Banksy has popped up in London (corner of Tottenham High Road and Philip Lane), this time a variation on the “No Ball Games” piece that we first told you about here.  If you recall, that piece had them throwing around a TV with a basketball showing on the screen.  This new stencil comes on the heels of another new piece that we showed you a couple days ago. Perhaps there are more to come?  More images after the jump…

Preview: COMPLEX Magazine October/November Issue – Clipse x KAWS Cover

The ever productive KAWS has produced another sick magazine cover. He’s collaborated with the rap duo Clipse many times before (including designing their album art). This time, he puts them in his signature blister packaging with imagery in the background from a painting in his recent Honor Fraser show “The Long Way Home” (covered here and here). The magazine hits newsstands on Oct. 6, but COMPLEX was nice enough to show us the cover and behind-the-scenes video before then. More images after the jump.

Studio Visits: Shepard Fairey – “Obama Campaign”

In anticipation of Shepard Fairey’s upcoming retrospective at the Andy Warhol Musueum in October, we thought it would be appropriate to dip into our vault and give you a little gem we’ve been saving for the perfect time. Last November, AM had the pleasure of visiting Shepard Fairey’s Obey/Studio Number One/Subliminal Projects headquarters in Los Angeles a few days after Barack Obama won the presidential election. You would think that Shepard and his crew would be taking a breather and enjoying the fruits of their […]

Behind the Scenes: The Date Farmers – “Medicine Crow” Print

We recently saw some behind the scenes photos of the making of The Date Farmers’ newest print “Medicine Crow” from Modern Multiples. If the image looks familiar to you, it’s probably because you saw it at their most recent exhibition, “Strange Fruit,” currently showing at FIFTY24SF. Sounds like there are three colorways so far – “Watermelon,” “Cotton Candy” and “Southwest.” Take a look at the photo set after the jump.

Video: Yoskay Yamamoto Interview for Scion “Self-Portraits” Exhibition

We are looking forward to Yoskay Yamamoto (interviewed) taking part in a New York show sometime in November.  We’ll have more on that later, but for now, check out this nice little interview he did in regards to the Scion Installation Tour (covered) that finally hit its last stop in Los Angeles.  He talked about his piece for the show as well as how he got started on the gallery circuit, among other things.  You can bid on Yoskay’s “Self Portrait” here if you are […]

Releases: David Choe – “Death Blossom” Print

Remember that show-stopper piece that David Choe painted in April for his solo show in China (covered)?  Apparently, he has decided to release a print of of the stunning “Death Blossom.”  It looks like this limited edition will be available for that Giant Robot Biennale 2 show at the Japanese American National Museum (JANM) next month that we told you about. To get an idea of how large that original painting was, take a look at Choe next it as well as check out his […]
