Openings: “Keith Haring: 1978-1982″ @ Brooklyn Museum

Last week, the Brooklyn Museum unveiled a special exhibition entitled Keith Haring: 1978-1982. The amazing retrospective chronicles the specific period of time when Keith Haring left his home of Pennsylvania to attend New York’s School of Visual Arts during which he met friends and peers such as Jean Michel Basquiat and Kenny Scharf. Haring’s integration and experimentation of both studio and street works are explored through 155 works on paper, seven videos and 150 archival objects – among them sketchbooks, journals, posters and subway drawings. Last Fall, AM caught an excellent exhibition at the Brooklyn Museum. The show entitled Andy Warhol: The Last Decade was an epic collection culled from the last 10 years of the famed artist’s illustrious career. The survey included almost 50 large scale works that demonstrated the newer styles which Andy Warhol incorporated into his already diverse repertoire in the latter part of his life. Last week, the Brooklyn Museum opened a mid-career survey of the work of Brooklyn-based artist Fred Tomaselli. Tomaselli—who grew up in Southern California, but has been working in Williamsburg since the ’80s—is known for his exciting mixed-media paintings, created by collaging figures and patterns from images of plants, birds and body parts clipped from nature field guides and magazines. The last time we were at the Brooklyn Museum, we were taking in Takashi Murakami’s Retrospective (covered). Recently, we went back with our friend Shepard Fairey as he gave an insightful artist discussion (previewed) along with a book signing for museum patrons and fans. For those of you in NYC that can’t wait for Shepard Fairey’s (featured) upcoming show at Deitch Projects (previewed), AM just got official confirmation that the Brooklyn Museum will be hosting a special artist-talk & discussion with Shepard Fairey on Sunday, April 25th. The Brooklyn Museum recently announced the launching of a new type of museum membership program that builds on the popularity and connectivity of online social networking sites, such as Facebook and Twitter. Called 1stfans, the program gives members access to the museum’s First Saturday events, where they will be able to meet and interact with other members and museum staff.
