Auctions: Dreweatts “Urban Contemporary Art” Sale (October)

Last night in London, Dreweatts kicked off an important week of auctions at the major houses with decidedly weak results. At a mere shadow of the £300,800 – 429,400 estimate, their October Urban Contemporary Art Sale realized a total of £166,320 ($258,646) non-inclusive of Buyer’s Premiums, barely half the low end estimate. Every Thing Must Go (previewed), the new Charming Baker pop-up show in London’s Covent Garden opened on Thursday 7 July. It was a well-organised, confidently-run operation on the night. Guests were looked after by a tag-team of hosts including the artist himself, his manager Tim Fennell, Pat Magnarella and Roger Klein of Pat Magnarella Management, and the Jealous Gallery crew. Charming Baker is back in London with a new pop-up exhibition that previews this evening at Mercer Street Studios (16 Mercer Street), an attractive space in Covent Garden. AM had a nose around the venue during the final preparations to check out Baker’s recent canvases, prints, as well as sculptures — a medium we haven’t associated with him before. You’ll see some funny sequences of him running through the streets of Chinatown and Lower East Side with his paintings. AM was on hand to experience the private opening of Charming Baker’s latest show “Stupid has a new Hero” at New York Studio Gallery (previewed). The pop up show welcomed a slew of friends and fans of London-based artist’s clever yet abrasive paintings. Charming Baker has got things set for his solo debut in New York city at New York Studio Gallery in the Lower East Side. The show, “Stupid has a new Hero”, looks to showcase more of Charming’s brush work with his abrasively interesting subject matter. It opens up May 14th and runs only two weeks. Last night was the preview opening of Charming Baker’s latest pop-up show “The Meaning of Everything” in London (previewed). The building was filled with excitement as Charming exhibited his latest body of work which showcases his mastery of abstract environments, loose strokes and detailed backgrounds with creative textures.
