Interview with Gaye Advert / Preview: “Beyond Punk” @ Signal Gallery

Two of our cultural loves come together this week in an artistic punk rock mash-up. “Beyond Punk” is a group art exhibition curated by femme punk icon Gaye Advert, the former bass guitarist of The Adverts. The show features a selection of musicians from the punk era who were either artists prior to being engulfed in the music scene or have turned to art as their form of expression. Several artists featured in the show are non-musicians, but have been long time followers of the [...]

Openings: Guy Denning & David Walker – “Surface Tension” @ Brooklynite Gallery

AM recently took a visit into Bedstuy’s Brooklynite Gallery to hang out and see their latest show “Surface Tension”. The exhibition comprised of works from two artists whose works seemingly take different directions. David Walker’s brighter palates and literal/photo-realistic portraits are created without a single brushstroke; in fact, only spray paint is used. The faces seemed to come together between the metallic and bright hues. On the other side of the coin we also enjoyed Guy Denning’s darker and deeper figurative painting. Utilizing oil and turpentine, [...]

With 100% of the proceeds going directly to the orphanage, it’s a definite win-win for all who participate in this very charitable event. More images after the jump.

Openings: “Represent” Group Show @ Blackall Studios

A group show that we previewed here a while back, “Represent,” opened a couple weeks ago at Blackall Studios in London. Curated by Matt Small (interviewed), the show featured artists such as Swoon (interviewed), and ELBOW-TOE (interviewed) among others – all who have developed their own approach to portraiture. Once reserved for the rich, these artists use portrait painting to bring focus to social issues that otherwise may go unnoticed. In fact, part of the proceeds from the show Single Homelessness Project, a charity Small [...]

Openings: Guy Denning – “Celebrity Will Eat Itself” @ Carmichael Gallery

Guy Denning’s lastest body of work “Celebrity Will East Itself,” currently showing at the Carmichael Gallery, goes beyond the glitz and glam of Hollywood and explores the darker side of stardom. Working with oils, Denning presents a series of dark and powerful pieces compounded of raw emotion that exposes the uncertainty and insecurities of his ambiguous celebrity subjects. The power of these pieces is further highlighted by the textures and painterly technique he employs. Detailed photos of the work and pics from the opening after the jump.

Auctions: “Vision 21″ @ Bonhams London

AM continues to look at the upcoming auctions with a review of the July 1st Vision 21 auction at Bonhams in London. Generally a grab bag of post war and contemporary art and design items, the auction is of particular interest to us this season as Bonhams has stuck a small selection of “Urban Art” in the back of the catalog. There is also a nice little Murakami sculpture that would be fun to own, some cool mid-century furniture and Warhol prints. Seems like it [...]
