James Marshall (Dalek) recently opened a show at the Womb Gallery in Oklahoma City featuring some minimalistic geometric paintings that bring to mind the nurturing motherly environs referenced by the name of the gallery. A couple Saturdays ago, the inaugural MTV RE:DEFINE benefit exhibition and auction opened at the Goss-Michael Foundation in Dallas. As we previewed a couple weeks back, curators, The Future Tense, brought together an impressive roster of 30 emerging and established artists in the contemporary and urban/street art genres – including such big names as Damien Hirst, Shepard Fairey, Harland Miller, Faile, Russell Young and Tracey Emin – to commemorate 30 years of AIDS research. On Thursday, September 22nd, Paul Kasmin Gallery will be opening an exhibition of seminal works from influential American painter Frank Stella. A couple Fridays ago, Orange County was treated to a captivating installation by James Marshal aka Dalek (interviewed) at the Hurley Space Gallery. Immersed in all directions by the New York-based artist’s geometric creations, viewers were also introduced to a matching line of Phantom 4D Board Shorts as well as some surfboards and bikes. Tonight in Toronto, a pair of geometrically inclined artists will be teaming up at the Show & Tell Gallery. Aptly named Geometric Balance, the joint showing will feature Dalek’s (interviewed) space monkey abstractions and Greg Lamarche (interviewed) typographic shapes. After ten straight days of painting, albeit with the help of some university art students, Dalek (interviewed) has completed a massive four panel, site-specific installation within the Birmingham Visual Arts Gallery at the University of Alabama. With minimalism more reminiscent of his Psych Optic Black Light Fuzz (Part 1 & Part 2) exhibitions over the winter than some of his more traditional work, the street artist turn gallery veteran utilized simple geometric forms and subtle shades of blue to strong effect. With Part 2 of Psych Optic Black Light Fuzz, Dalek (interviewed) concluded his atypical, yet engaging dual exhibition at Hurley )( Space in Costa Mesa, CA, a stones throw away from where Part 1 (covered) was staged, in truly psychedelic fashion. In a partnership that began back in 2009 when Dalek’s (interviewed) art first graced the walls of Hurley Headquarters with a massive 10×22 ft mural, the surf inspired boutique clothing outfit and the Southern Californian contemporary artist have ever since worked together to foster creativity and positivity within their local community.
