Previews: ‘Made in China’ @ Ian Ross Gallery

Made in China is a group show with a difference. Within it, you’ll see work from the likes of D Young V, Akira Beard, Jessica Hess (pictured above), Ernesto Yerena and Eddie Colla amongst others. You’ll also see counterfeit reproductions of the artworks presented alongside the original pieces. Curator Eddie Colla invited a group of artists to create a painting each and then sent photos of all the work to a Chinese factory to be reproduced by artists who make copies of Monets and Picassos […]

Openings: “Wider than a postcard” & olive47 – “bonita bonita” @ Breeze Block Gallery

Breeze Block Gallery opened their huge group show Wider than a postcard (previewed) alongside the first solo show in their new gallery 2 space – olive47’s bonita bonita (featured) a couple of weeks back to a packed Portland crowd. Over 400 individual works went into the postcard show with 200 artists providing postcard sized works. The work was hung on the walls in grids of 24 cards, each echoing the aspect ratio of the individual works themselves as each work was 6×4 inches. The variance of work encompassed photography […]

Previews: “Wider than a postcard” @ Breeze Block Gallery

On the back of his Space//Form group exhibition last year (covered), Arrested Motion’s Sven Davis is working with Breeze Block Gallery in Portland again on another huge group event entitled Wider than a postcard. With over 200 artists and 400 individual works, this exhibition looks to be both bigger than the previous event and also smaller at the same time as all of the artworks are postcard sized at 6×4 inches. Each artist is either making work on a found / owned postcard and adapting / adding […]

Openings: Jessica Hess – “Fade and Finish” @ Spoke Art

Last Friday evening, Spoke Art hosted Jessica Hess’s latest exhibition, Fade and Finish. With this body of work, she explored using gouache on paper (as opposed to predominately oil on canvas paintings in previous exhibitions) and depicted urban landscapes in both daylight and moonlight. In this show, she also explored realistically depicting texture that is inspired by wheat pastes in New York, as well as pinup images that grew out of her love of vintage radio and movies. Check out some pics from the opening […]

Openings: Jessica Hess – “It Finds You” @ White Walls SF

In addition to her works of oil on canvas, the show also includes photographs, smaller works of gouache on paper, as well as and an installation of work done on old spray cans which are used to contrast and compliment her paintings. Check out photos from the opening after […]

Openings: Kevin Cyr and Jessica Hess – “Temporal Surfaces” @ White Walls

Opening alongside Aaron Nagel’s Marks at the Shooting Gallery was Kevin Cyr and Jessica Hess‘ “Temporal Surfaces” at the adjoining White Walls gallery. Cleverly curated by Lainya Maganya, “Temporal Surfaces” brings together two documentarists of the bleak urban and industrial landscape. Jessica Hess’ calming oil-based renditions of derelict billboards and abandoned railway cars accurately captures the temporal and transitional movement of light across these surfaces while invigorating life and beauty into otherwise drab and dreary locales. Kevin Cyr’s (studio visit and interview) seemingly case study-like […]
