Recap: Kate MccGwire @ St Mary in the Castle

The Coastal Currents Festival of Visual Arts in Hastings in the South East of England, recently hosted new work from Kate MccGwire. Known for her sculptural works created from feathers, the British artist elected to create two site-specific installation pieces – Secrete (seen above) and Purge. Upcoming: Kate MccGwire – “Lure” @ All Visual Arts

Later this month, sculptor Kate MccGwire returns to All Visual Arts in her home city of London (see 2011) for a new solo show entitled Lure – “a dual reference to the ring of feathers used by a falconer to call and command their birds, and to the siren-like call of the work itself.” Creating non-conventional sculptural works with her material of choice – iridescent feathers – MccGwire is able to shape the plumage into undulating and seductive structures. Along with smaller works (like those seen here), the showstopper promises to […]

Update: Kate Mccgwire

It appears that the London-based Kate MccGwire has created some new work since her showing at All Visual Arts last April. For this series, the sculptor who utilizes feathers has enclosed her beautiful free-flowing forms in what look to be vintage cabinets. The pieces entitled Guile, Lure, Quell, Seer and Yearn feature carefully placed plumage from both MccGwire’s light and dark winged friends, transformed into emotion-evoking abstractions with her gifted hands. Take a look at more photos after the jump, but you can also currently see her […]

Kate MccGwire – “Bound” @ All Visual Arts

We don’t often cover taxidermic art here on AM, but when we do, it’s usually pretty special (also see Polly Morgan and David Shrigley). London-based Kate MccGwire’s recent work is only vaguely related to taxidermy but does share a common thread with the use of feathers to create beautiful yet sometimes disturbing sculptures and installations. The just ended showing at All Visual Arts featured her latest undulating creation entitled Bound of which you can see more pics after the jump… Make sure you also check […]
