Streets: Mike Stilkey – ‘The Zoo Drop’ Mural @ The Standard (DTLA)

Mike Stilkey (interviewed) has just finished a 42 foot long installation at Downtown LA’s mural hotspot outside The Standard hotel and gave us a little background to the piece: ‘A homeless guy came by and told me he hadn’t seen anything like this since the zoo drop. I asked him what the zoo drop was and he said it was when all those planes and helicopters dropped animals out of the sky. Hence the title of the piece just had to be The Zoo Drop.’ Stilkey […]

Showing: Alexander Calder @ L&M Arts

Currently showing at L&M Arts in Los Angeles through June 16th is a selection of work from renowned American sculptor and artist Alexander Calder, some never seen before by the public. Preview: Melissa Cooke – “Surfaced” @ Koplin Del Rio

Culver City’s Koplin Del Rio will be presenting the second solo showing from Melissa Cooke at their gallery this Saturday night, May 19th. Entitled Surfaced, the new body of work comprising of powdered graphite on paper pieces explores the relationship between photography, painting and drawing in portraiture. Cooke takes photographs as she paints and pour liquids onto herself using her face as a canvas. Openings: “FRENCH INVASION” @ Fabien Castanier Gallery

Several days ago, the Fabien Castanier Gallery in Los Angeles hosted a group show for a selection of French street artists appropriately entitled FRENCH INVASION. Featuring the likes of Speedy Graphito, JonOne, Nasty, Rero and Tilt, the space was filled with paintings, installations, silkscreens and sculpture from each artist. Last weekend, deep in the heart of Los Angeles, the Known Gallery unveiled the latest work from the locally based duo, Dabs Myla. Break Night Lovers featured drawings, paintings, art objects, and a whimsical installation mimicking the inside of house complete with a fridge, painted stove, TV, table, chairs, and more.
