Openings: “District La Brea” Group Exhibition @ MK2 Projects

Last weekend, MK2 Projects, the special exhibition space of Merry Karnowsky in Los Angeles, hosted a group showing from Shepard Fairey, Deedee Cheriel, Mercedes Helnwein, Mark Whalen / Kill Pixie, Mel Kadel, Travis Millard, Matt Small, Samuel Lowder (FrePrs), Lezley Saar, Aiko Nakagawa, Todd Carpenter and Steven R. Teaser: “District La Brea” Group Exhibition @ MK2 Projects

MK2 Projects, the special exhibition space from Merry Karnowsky, will open a group exhibition from 7-10pm tomorrow, November 11th, in conjunction with the unveiling of Shepard Fairey’s (featured) latest “District La Brea” mural (more on this later). Openings: Matt Small – “Recognition” @ Merry Karnowsky Gallery

Last Friday, Matt Small (interviewed) opened his first U.S. exhibition at Merry Karnowsky Gallery, as part of the BritWeek Art Program in partnership with the British Council and the L.A. Art Machine. AM had to cut our evening in London short this Thursday due to problems with the trains, so unfortunately missed our VNA friends’ new issue launch, but we did manage to get to Black Rat Projects’ Printmaking Today show. An inspirational show from Matt Small (interviewed) opened last night at Black Rat Projects in London. Not only was the artwork stunning, like the showstopper seen above, the subjects of Matt’s paintings were students from a project he participated in earlier this year where he conducted workshops in Zambia (covered). “That I May See” featured portraits using the the UK artist’s unique vibrant and colorful swirl technique with 40% of the proceeds going to the Robert Shitima School from the aforementioned Zambia project. You may remember that earlier this year we reported on an amazing trip by Matt Small (interviewed), Swoon (interviewed), RJ Rushmore (from Vandalog), and Mike Snelle from Black Rat Projects (interviewed) to Zambia to run a series of art activities with local children at the Robert Shitima School. Art Stars – Polo Jeans Project

Starting early this year, Polo Jeans Co. Ralph Lauren began commissioning artists all over Europe to customize star shaped “canvases” made from denim. This list includes many artists that readers of AM will be familiar with including Matt Small (interviewed), Pam Glew, Pedro Matos, Herakut (interviewed), Delta, and Case. Swoon & Matt Small in Zambia

Recently Swoon (interviewed), Matt Small (interviewed), Mike Snelle from Black Rat Press (interviewed), and RJ Rushmore (from Vandalog) traveled to Zambia to work with students at the Robert Shitima School. The school allows orphans and children from nearby shantytowns to get free K-9 schooling. With the help of Zamcog, they were able to give art workshops on activities such as printmaking with lino-blocks, portrait painting, and collage to 200+ students. Teaser: Matt Small & Zac Walsh – “This is Us” @ Signal Gallery

Matt Small (interviewed) and his friend Zac Walsh will be opening a show next week entitled “This is Us” at the Signal Gallery (interviewed) in London. Small will be bringing more of his signature paintings with his colorful marbleized technique based on photos he takes off the streets.
