ArtPadSF ’12 – “Highlights”

ArtPadSF hosted its second annual boutique art fair over the weekend, which coincides with ArtMrkt and SFFAF. Unlike your traditional art fair with booths, this one takes over the Phoenix Hotel in the heart of the Tenderloin District in San Francisco with each gallery taking up their own room in the hotel, which gives a more laid-back pop-up gallery vibe. Throughout the weekend, various programming (lectures, music performances, panel discussions) took place in the courtyard as well as in the bar of the hotel. The fair [...]

Openings: Judith Supine – “Ladyboy” @ New Image Art

“A crazy fun and visually arresting experience” – that’s our take on the opening night of New York-based Judith Supine. As previewed, the exhibition at New Image Art entitled Ladyboy touches on an intimate encounter that the artist once had in Bangkok. Using his signature hypercolor and collaging techniques, Judith transformed the entire space (from floor to ceiling, covering every inch) into something resembling a corner of his unique mind. The gallery was packed from opening moments as fans and a parade of “ladyboys” came [...]

Previews: Judith Supine – ‘Ladyboy’ @ New Image Art

Ladyboy, a solo exhibition by collagist Judith Supine, opens at New Image Art in West Hollywood on Wednesday, 13 April. It’s already been three years since the 2008 Dirt Mansion installation — the artist’s first solo effort at English Kills Art Gallery in Brooklyn. Wooster Collective described the show as their favourite of the year and AM can separately confirm that, quite frankly, it rocked. With Ladyboy, we’ve been promised another real spectacle including giant woodcut sculptures measuring up to 14-feet high. It sounds like [...]

Basel Week Miami ’10: New Image Art

Last night, New Image Art took over South Beach’s Cafeina for a group exhibition (teased) that should prove to be one of the more compelling events of Art Basel Week. As is often the case, Sao Paulo street art sensations Osgemeos stole the show with their heartfelt interpretations of their Brazilian countrymen, always dressed to impress in colorfully patterned attire. A selection of giant canvases, executed flawlessly with spray cans and incorporating the playful imagery and vibrant palette that has become patented by the Twins, [...]

Preview: Cleon Peterson – ‘Daybreak’ @ New Image Art

The art of Cleon Peterson has never been for the fainthearted. Like Pieter Bruegel the Elder‘s painting The Triumph of Death, his unapologetic, graphic depictions of acts of brutality are both disquieting and strangely captivating. Daybreak is the artist’s latest solo show opening this Saturday, November 20th at New Image Art Gallery. The exhibition, which draws inspiration and its title from Nietzsche’s Daybreak: Reflections on Moral Prejudices, marks Peterson’s powerful return with another morally ambiguous and beautifully composed orgy of violence. See our preview of [...]

Interviews / Opening: Richard Colman “Keep Out The Light” @ New Image Art

After six months of studio time, and a week in the gallery prior to the opening installing his latest exhibition, Richard Colman opened his “Keep Out The Light” exhibition at New Image Art recently. We have been watching out for updates on how the show was coming together, as Colman’s shows are usually very installation heavy, and always exciting. Richard was pounding the tools until the early hours each day with the install, and the scale & intensity of this show certainly doesn’t disappoint – [...]

Openings: Date Farmers – “Strange Fruit” @ Fifty24SF

Growing up outside Los Angeles, we would find ourselves, once every couple years or so, visiting historic downtown.  Whether checking out the Bradbury building, Union Station or Chinatown, we always made sure to take a stroll down the birthplace of the City of Angels, Olvera Street.  Centered around a traditional Mexican style plaza, Olvera Street is a historic hub and insight to Mexicano culture.  Featuring colorful dresses, bollero musicians, Oaxacan altars, churro carts, Sacred Hearts and bootleg Mickey Mouse shirts, the energy and spirit of [...]

Openings: Lydia Fong, Clare Rojas, Andrew Jeffrey Wright – “American Realities” @ New Image Art

New Image Art packed the house last night with their “American Realities” group show featuring the work of Barry McGee, working under the pseudonym Lydia Fong, his wife Clare Rojas, and their long-time friend and collaborator Andrew Jeffrey Wright. McGee presented some classic pieces containing his iconic figures and continued his exploration of geometric patterns and shape with an installation that encompassed one of the gallery’s walls. Fans were excited that the normally private and reclusive McGee graciously chatted with and signed and sketched for [...]

Armory Focus: Bast Studio Visit by New Image Art

The thing about ”Art Show” week (Armory, Art Basel, Art LA) is not only exposure to all the great art you can handle, but you also realize how small the art community is. Seeing big-named artists walking down the aisle and celebrities moving from booth to booth is not an uncommon occurrence. At the Armory Art Fair, we ran into Marsea Goldberg of LA’s New Image Art. Marsea told AM that she was in town not only to check out Armory Week, but also to “catch up” [...]

Armory Week: Armory Art Show NYC

The ARMORY Art Show as it’s name implies, was literally a stockpile of the art world’s heavy artillery. With works from Damien Hirst, Yoshitomo Nara, Kara Walker, Kenny Scharf, Kehinde Wiley, Gilbert & George, Julian Opie, Marilyn Minters, Tom Sachs and many more, the stockade of high caliber art stretched the imagination. Much like Art Basel in Miami, we struggled to keep up with the long aisles filled with notable galleries such as White Cube, Emmanuel Perrotin, Honor Fraser, and Mizuma that all brought their [...]
