One of the people we connected with in Hawaii for the POW WOW event (covered) was videographer Mikey Inouye. It seemed him and his crew were everywhere at the same time documenting all the action. The fruits of their labor are now evident with this new video. In association with Hypebeast TV, this is the first in a three part series featuring footage of the setup, live painting, and interviews with the participants including founder Jasper Wong. If you like what you see, you can […]
The POW WOW wasn’t only an indoor affair. Being in Hawaii, the gang took full advantage of all that the beautiful tropical atmosphere had to offer. An entire side of the building (across from Fresh Cafe) was secured for the artists who quickly put their street game facse on. Prime, Wu Yue, 123Klan, Will Barras, Meggs, and Ekundayo grabbed their spray cans to work under the Honolulu sky. The end product was dynamic murals created so that the local art fans could enjoy for years to come. […]
The weeks of setup for the POW WOW ’11 in Honolulu culminated in blowout showcase bringing together talent from different parts of the world. Artists such as Will Barras, Meggs, Ekundayo, Prime, Jeff Hamada, 123Klan, Aaron de la Cruz, Kamea Hadar, Suitman and Jasper Wong created unique indoor and outdoor site specific art for display at the giant Loft in Space venue behind Fresh Cafe. One of the highlights of our trip to Hawaii for POW WOW ’11 was spending some time with Young Kim. The performance artist, photographer, designer, creative director, and videographer has worked with many the major brands out there. His famous alterego – Suitman – is the physical representation of his cultural alienation and acceptance issues as he has lived and worked in many places since childhood. With a long line of people waiting to be photographed for one of his personal projects in the signature […]
It’s been a crazy few days since we landed in sunny Hawaii where the crew has been in the thick of getting ready for the big POW WOW ’11. We worked alongside our friends at Hypebeast, Booooooom and the rest of the sponsors to stretch canvases and build modular installation platforms in anticipation for Saturday night’s opening. Artists such as Will Barras, Meggs, Ekundayo, Prime, Jeff Hamada, 123Klan, Kamea Hadar and Jasper Wong have begun working on their various murals. It’s looking to be a tremendous event come […]
Mr. Booooooom (that’s seven o’s), Jeff Hamada, will be one of the artists joining the POW WOW crew as they get together for their live painting today. Although you may be more familiar with his website Booooooom, known for introducing new artists as well as their interactive projects with their readers (ie: the Little Drifters – project), Jeff is also an artist himself. We learn a little more about him in the interview after the jump…
Some other participants in this year’s POW WOW will be Scien and Klor, repping the 123Klan from Montreal. Initially formed as a graffiti crew 20 years ago, the klan has branched out to branding, creation of logos, character design, illustration and typefaces, all the while staying true to their first love – graffiti. Take a look after the jump as we sit down with the husband and wife duo for a short interview.
Various members of the AM crew will start flying in to Oahu tomorrow for this year’s POW WOW, so it’s time for another interview with a late addition to the party, Ekundayo. He’s already prepped the venue with a wall mural he collaborated on with Aaron Martin (seen here), so we know he’s ready to get his art jam on starting on Wednesday. Take a look at the interview after the jump as we get his thoughts on the event in his hometown among other […]
With POW WOW fast approaching next week, we will be publishing a series of interviews with the participants of this year’s event. Naturally, first up is the mastermind behind the annual art get-together, Jasper Wong. A man of many talents – artist, gallery owner (Above Second), illustrator, and crossdresser – we’ll be looking forward to what he has planned for us next week when the festivities start. Take a look at the questions and answers after the jump…
