Recap: POW (Pictures On Walls), London

“Pictures On Walls has been taken over by venture anti-capitalists and will cease trading from 31st December 2017.” This text appeared earlier today @ PicturesOnWalls.com, official website of London-based groundbreaking printing house. After 16 years of not only changing, but literally forming and directing the course that urban and street art was going, they pretty much announced the end of an era. For those of you that don’t know, POW started back in 2001 by a group of graffiti artists and illustrators working outside the margins […]

Releases: Banksy – “Petrol Bomb” Poster

As with his last release through POW, Banksy will once again generously use his clout by donating the proceeds from the sale of a new poster to a good cause. Instead of going towards the bail set on imprisoned members of Russian subversive street art collective Voina, the money will go to the Peoples Republic of Stokes Croft, in an effort to help in the wake of the Bristol Tesco riots over the weekend. The poster will be made exclusively available during Bristol’s Anarchist Bookfair […]

Openings: ‘Marks & Stencils’ pop-up gallery, London

Last Thursday, AM was in London’s Soho district to attend the opening of Marks & Stencils: the Pictures On Walls Christmas season pop-up gallery exhibition, which in previous years has gone by the name of Santa’s Ghetto. There was a great atmosphere at the event. No doubt this was partly assisted by the deceptively strong cocktails being served, which led us to yet again repeat our mistake of equating “sweet drink” with “harmless drink”. But that’s another story. The show harbours a selection of prints […]

Setup / Releases: “Marks and Stencils” and Banksy’s “Choose Your Weapon” Print

What do we spy in the window through which the Marks and Stencils show we mentioned previously is being set up? It looks like the rumored new Banksy print Choose Your Weapon (60 cm x 60 cm, £450.00) which will be released later this month and is based on his recent “Keith Haring Dog” stencil. This group show curated by Pictures on Walls at a 1 Berwick Street in Soho looks to be like the Santa’s Ghetto (featuring Dran and other artists) for this year […]

Preview: Dran – ‘My Everyday Life’ & ‘I Have Chalks’ @ Pictures On Walls London

French artist and DMV crew member Dran has been causing ripples of excitement for a while in street art circles, and is now set to make a big splash over the course of the next week by opening two shows in London. My Everyday Life is first to open. This installation will feature a selection of original works in the mediums of sculpture and painting. Dran’s Scribouille character – shown above – is set to be the main focus of the show, and you can […]

Streets: Interesni Kazki in Barcelona

AM has been keeping a close eye on AEC and Waone, who together form the Ukranian duo Interesni Kazki (Interesting Fairy Tales). Earlier this year, the two Kiev-based artists had a solo show at Galerie All Over in Lyon, France. Last month, original drawings by them were displayed at Pictures On Walls in a group show coinciding with the launch (featured) of Tristan Manco‘s new book, Street Sketchbook: Journeys. Another exhibition of their colourful fantasy-world creations will be held next spring in Milan. Interesni Kazki […]

Releases / Giveaway: Paul Insect – ‘Unclear Residents’ Folio @ Pictures on Walls

AM stopped by Paul Insect’s folio release event at Pictures on Walls last week to take a look at the ‘Unclear Residents‘ set. The evening presented a series of Paul’s screen-printed targets pasted about the walls, along with the selection of prints and a huge bank of page-spreads from the two limited zines available in the hand-made folio. At the time of writing, the edition of 80 sets seems to be close to sold out, with just 3 sets remaining. The scrapbook ‘Beat the Devils‘ and the […]

Openings: Tristan Manco – “Street Sketchbook: Journeys” Book Launch @ Pictures On Walls

Although people often exaggerate about how bad London weather is, the city did live up to its reputation on Friday, October 1st when hit by repeated rain showers.  It was one of those grim and miserable days where even locals armed with umbrellas lose the will to fight.  They simply resign themselves to the fate bestowed upon them of damp clothing, wet shoes and socks, and a squishing sound made with each footstep. Resisting the temptation that evening to just go straight home, lie down […]

Streets: Anthony Lister in London

Directly following the opening of his installation at NYC’s Standard Hotel, Australian artist Anthony Lister (interviewed) hauled across the pond to visit London for a few days. AM contributor Patrick Nguyen caught up with him on Friday for a chat and to take some photographs as Lister spray painted two shutters and the adjoining pillar at Pictures On Walls on Commercial Street. Does this mean a POW / Lister edition is on the cards? We’ll have to wait and see… Painting began shortly after 4:30 […]
