Baby Tattooville ’11: “Baby Tattooville On Parade” Opening @ Riverside Art Museum

One of the biggest benefits for artists participating in the annual Baby Tattooville celebration is having their work exhibited in the Riverside Art Museum for all to see even after the exclusive weekend festivities end (you have about five weeks – until Nov. 8 – to catch show).  Entering its fifth year of hosting exhibitions featuring BT artists, this collection is a retrospective of sorts that includes works from those that have had their work in the annual show in the past. The star-studded line-up […]

Preview: “La Luz De Jesus 25” Part I

How many artists does a gallery owner represent, show, and deal with in the course of 25 years? The answer is a lot – so much so that the anniversary show for Billy Shire and his landmark La Luz De Jesus gallery needs to split the lineup between two separate exhibitions, one month apart. There is certainly much to celebrate as the gallery was an avenue for many of the shining stars of the Low Brow Movement to display their work back in a time […]

Preview: “Kustom Kulture 2011″ @ Copro Gallery

You can’t get more Low Brow than this. On Saturday night, Copro Gallery has assembled some works from some of the original giants of the movement for a one night only show entitled Kustom Kulture 2011. Don’t miss the chance to catch some works from Robert Williams, R. Crumb, The Pizz, Big Daddy Roth, and Von Dutch in person. More preview images after the jump…

Basel Week Miami ’10: Robert Williams @ Tony Shafrazi

Tony Shafrazi’s booth was one of the first ones we made a beeline to when we entered the main fair at Art Basel. As advertised, our attention was dominated by Robert Williams’ newest sculpture, The Brain Trap, which we can fully reveal now. This was surrounded by other paintings from Williams along with the Diamond in a Goat’s Ass sculpture, and work by Dennis Hopper, and Ed Ruscha. More photos after the jump…

Preview: Basel Week Miami ’10: Robert Williams @ Tony Shafrazi Gallery

We’ve been ratcheting up our coverage of Art Basel Week in recent weeks as the granddaddy of all art fairs opens this week, but how could the festivities in Miami Beach be complete without an appearance by the godfather of Low Brow – Robert Williams? Tony Shafrazi will be unveiling a new 11 foot tall sculpture The Brain Trap from Williams along with putting his other sculptures Diamond in a Goat’s Ass and Brute Waste on display, which were first seen at his exhibition at […]

Beyond Eden ’10 / Video: Robert Williams Lifetime Achievement Award

To cap off the our coverage of the Beyond Eden Art Fair, we bring you this video from sketchv from the Saturday night presentation of a lifetime achievement award to Robert Williams. This giant of the Low Brow movement puts things into perspective by saying “…I’ve been coming to this place (Barnsdall Park) for 47 years and believe me, 10 years ago you couldn’t have this kind of art in this venue. Abstract Expressionism, Conceptualism ruled here until right up until recently. If you come […]

Baby Tattooville ’10 – Robert Williams Roast

Baby Tattooville 2010 featured a special tribute to Robert Williams. From helping pave the way for young artists to founding JUXTAPOZ magazine, Robert Williams has been an enormous influence on alternative art. That influence is immeasurable. Still, to get a better understanding of the artist who brought the term “low brow” into the fine arts lexicon, Baby Tattooville assembled a roast with a panel of some of the individuals closest to Mr. Williams. During the Roast, Williams was subjected to good-natured ridicule by friends Mat […]

Baby Tattooville ’10: “California Kustom” Museum Reception

As blissful and adventurous as the confines of the Mission Inn (where everything usually goes down) are, sometimes it is good to leave and take a field trip during Baby Tattooville. As has become tradition for the event, the Riverside Art Museum, in conjunction with BT, opened an exhibition featuring artists from the weekend-long extravaganza. The show—which unlike other BT events is open to the public—includes fantastic works by Robert and Suzanne Williams, Ron English, Coop, Michael Hussar, Anthony Ausgang, William Stout, Spain Rodriguez, Van […]

Baby Tattooville ’10 – “Late Night Madness” with Michael Hussar

Michael Hussar returned for Baby Tattooville 2010 and once again graciously hosted one of the key events of the special weekend. Each night, Hussar’s suite became the site for non-stop late night festivities. BT attendees joined in on sketching the models in one room, while artists such as Ron English, Johnny “KMNDZ” Rodriguez, Van Arno and Robert Williams could be seen participating in photoshoots with the models, sketching under Sketch Theatre and just flat out partying. Great art, beautiful models and partying until the morning… […]
