This week, we saw the release of Hennessy’s annual artist designed VS cognac bottle, tapping contemporary & tattoo artist Scott Campbell for the new look. Long an AM favorite, the New York-based artist brings a unique visual aesthetic which fuses his eye for the human “exterior” design with his use creative mediums (such as re-imagining the use of uncut US currency or creating graphite drawings on the interior of an eggshell) to reinterpret the iconic VS cognac bottle. Scott Campbell’s second showing with Galerie Gmurzynska’s St. Moritz (Via Serias) location recently opened, giving his fans in Switzerland a chance to admire a diverse range of works. The Smartest Thing I Ever Did Were Foolish Things For Love is dedicated to the theme of love, no doubt inspired by his recent marriage. Paintings, sculptures, cut currency works, as well as “fuse paintings,” which are created by drawing with gunpowder and then ignited, fill the space with examples of the Brooklyn-based artist’s recent creative output and “love statements.” […]
After finishing a unique and daring project as inspiration for the paintings in his solo in Los Angeles several months ago (covered), Scott Campbell has worked on something closer to home. On the cover of the latest issue of New York Magazine is his wife Lake Bell covered in his art and profiled in an article along with the tattoo artist. For now, Lake won’t be joining Scott with permanent body art as this piece was temporary, although technically she does have a small pea-sized tattoo. […]
Last night, Scott Campbell unveiled a new body of work in Los Angeles at OHWOW Gallery entitled Things Get Better. Mostly consisting of paintings of what he calls “Frankenguns,” jerry-rigged tattoo guns that he was able to make inside of jails in Mexico (with looser regulations than in the United States) and administer tattoos to inmates. Learn more about his unique personal project here and check out some photos from the opening below… Photo credit: Waltercrunk for Arrested Motion. Discuss this show here. Discuss Scott Campbell here.
Tomorrow night (May 23rd) at the OHWOW Gallery in Los Angeles, tattoo and fine artist Scott Campbell will be opening a new solo show entitled Things Get Better. The new series of ink paintings depict his “Frankenguns,” hand-made contraptions built inside prisons to administer tattoos to inmates. This culmination of a personal project he started two years ago took him to the inside of Mexican prisons with improvised tools, a true art form that contrasts with superficiality of the contemporary tattoo world. Check out some preview images below […]

If you remember earlier this year, we told you about a new book by Scott Campbell entitled If You Don’t Belong, Don’t Be Long. As you may know, the good folks at OHWOW have a fresh new retail location called the OHWOW Book Club in New York which was the perfect setting for a recent book signing by Campbell for his new publication. Check out some photos of the signing and the new location after the jump.
As we mentioned last year, Scott Campbell’s first book, If You Don’t Belong, Don’t Be Long, is now fully baked and ready for consumption. Published by Rizzoli and OHWOW, the hardcover monograph chronicles the origins of, parallels between, and indelible influence of his tattoo work and his fine art, with his cut-currency sculptures already making headlines again this year during showings in both Zurich and Singapore last month. The comprehensive 208-page publication is as rich in imagery as it is insightful in commentary, including a series of salient […]
