Upcoming: Kate MccGwire – “Lure” @ All Visual Arts

Later this month, sculptor Kate MccGwire returns to All Visual Arts in her home city of London (see 2011) for a new solo show entitled Lure – “a dual reference to the ring of feathers used by a falconer to call and command their birds, and to the siren-like call of the work itself.” Creating non-conventional sculptural works with her material of choice – iridescent feathers – MccGwire is able to shape the plumage into undulating and seductive structures. Along with smaller works (like those seen here), the showstopper promises to […]

Showing: Anish Kapoor @ Lisson Gallery

Currently at the two locations of the Lisson Gallery in London, Anish Kapoor has gathered a comprehensive collection of his recent works for a showing that will run through November 10th. Known for his brightly colored and large-scale mirror-like creations, the Indian-born British sculptor has chosen to also focus on another side of his repertoire for this exhibition with a selection of his earth works in varied compositions. Rounding things out nicely in Lisson’s sculpture yard is Intersection, a piece from Kapoor fabricated from steel that almost […]

Faile in Mongolia (Part 1)

Over the years we have followed FAILE to China, Spain, the UK and way too many remote locations to list, but never did we expect to be crossing the seas to a place where the horse runs wild, Buddhism is the law of the land and the beef is no doubt to die for. That’s right ladies and gentleman, FAILE is headed to Ulan Bator, Mongolia, working in collaboration with Mongolian Sculptor, Bat Munkh and Arrested Motion is going to be bringing you all the […]

Openings: Gregory Euclide – “Observing only the ease of my own slipping toward your unknown” @ David B. Smith Gallery

A couple weeks back, the David B. Smith Gallery in Denver hosted the opening for Gregory Euclide’s latest solo show. Entitled Observing only the ease of my own slipping toward your unknown, the new work sees Euclide continue to walk the thin line between two and three dimensional art. Utilizing a visual vocabulary that includes the natural world and architectural elements, the show includes large scale paintings and sculptural assemblages, smaller mono prints, and Laid Down & Wiped Slowly Away – temporary painting composed by Euclide on a 48 x 96 inch […]

Showing: Adam Neate – “Dimensional Paintings & Editions” @ Elms Lester

Over the weekend, Elms Lesters hosted the opening for another solo (see 2011) from Adam Neate (interviewed) entitled Dimensional Paintings & Editions. The new body of work consisted of exactly that – his signature three-dimensionaly and richly textured paintings that pop right out of the wall and limited edition offerings. The almost sculptural quality of his pieces really need to be seen in person to be fully appreciated. In some of the them, he was even able to include the cardboard his earlier work was associated with. Photo credit: Smart Hype. […]

Preview: Slinkachu – “Global Model Village” @ Andipa Gallery

Last month, we gave you a heads up on Slinkachu’s new show opening on September 27th at the Andipa Gallery in London. Now, take a look as we have gathered more preview images for Global Model Village, an exhibition featuring the street miniaturist’s installations from cities all over the world. An example of this is the piece above entitled Balancing Act that he placed at the Khayelitsha township in Cape Town, South Africa. The settlement is home to around 500,000 people and experiences many problems such as poverty, crime and a […]

Upcoming: Jen Stark – “To the Power Of” @ Martha Otero

Martha Otero Gallery will be presenting Jen Stark’s first solo exhibition in Los Angeles (where she currently lives and works) at the end of the month. The title of the show, To the Power Of, refers to her interest in mathematics with the term being a “statement of exponential growth which also infers the definition of ‘power’ as both the possession of physical or mental control and the fortitude to act decisively.” Anyone who has seen her stunning paper cut sculptures in person can attest to the […]

Openings: Tomokazu Matsuyama – “New Work” @ Mark Moore Gallery

Just this last weekend, the NY-based Tomokazu Matsuyama (interviewed) opened a new showing at the Mark Moore Gallery. Bringing with him several tondos as well as his irregularly shaped canvases, Matsu filled the project room with a juxtaposition of eastern and western imagery. Mixing things up, the new body of work also included two works on paper that he placed on a hand-painted wall as well as a re-cast of a 18th century erotic Chinese porcelain figure (customized for the Los Angeles area) that he encased in resin. Discuss Matsu here.
