We don’t often cover taxidermic art here on AM, but when we do, it’s usually pretty special (also see Polly Morgan and David Shrigley). London-based Kate MccGwire’s recent work is only vaguely related to taxidermy but does share a common thread with the use of feathers to create beautiful yet sometimes disturbing sculptures and installations. Openings: Scott Campbell – “Blankness Is Not A Void” @ Marc Jancou Contemporary

Last night, AM stopped by the Marc Jancou Contemporary to check out New York-based Scott Campbell part of the exhibition Blankness Is Not A Void, a three person affair that also included the late Steven Parrino and Raymond Pettibon (more on this later). The tattoo-turned-fine artist brought with him his signature cut currency as well as some delicate ostrich eggshell paintings, first seen at his recent Los Angeles show (covered) just last month. May will be a month of multiple Ryan McGinness shows in Los Angeles, one of which will be held at the PRISM gallery on Sunset. Trophies, a new solo from the NY-based artist at the impressive space, will open on May 26th and feature new gold sculptures from his Women series (covered in Miami and New York). Streets: Will Ryman – “Roses” @ Park Avenue

As AM ran through the streets of New York’s Midtown district we had the pleasure of catching Will Ryman’s latest outdoor installation – The Roses. Made possible with support from Paul Kasmin Gallery, Will created beautiful giant sized floral sculptures that lined each street center from 57th to 67th streets along the prestigious Park Avenue in NYC. Last Saturday in New York, Souther Salazar presented a delightful new body of work at the Jonathan LeVine Gallery. The show, entitled You Come Too, featured paintings of fantastical worlds, inventive mixed media assemblages, and rich installations centered around ideas of inclusion, sharing adventure, and togetherness which in no small part were inspired by his recent life experiences. Jessica Harrison, whose bloody ceramic sculptures first caught our eyes at a group show last summer, will be opening a solo show later this month in London. Entitled Broken, a nod to the similarly named collection of figurines (Breaking), Harrison’s gory handiwork will be on display at the Jealous Gallery starting on April 28th. Fans of self-mutilation will have to make sure they stop by to check out the decapitated and disemboweled takes on these classic pieces if they are in town. More preview images […]

Back during Art Basel Miami, we had the pleasure of visiting the Miami studio of Argentinian-born, Miami/NY-based artist Martin Oppel. Oppel, who has shown with Galerie Emmanuel Perrotin in Miami and Paris amongst others, works in a wide range of mediums—including painting, sculpture and most recently photography—often focusing on the materials and the process of art, while also making work that is visually attractive and thought-provoking. A 23 foot tall, 20 ton bronze teddy bear from Urs Fischer was recently installed in New York at the Park Avenue plaza. The signature sculptural piece entitled Untitled (Lamp/Bear) from the young Swiss artist will be in place for public consumption until it goes on the block next month at Christie’s where it’s expected to fetch over $10 million dollars.
