There is something attractive about the clean aesthetics of Jim Houser’s paintings that seem to resonate with the viewer. As you take in his whole body of work for each show, you start to realize that there seems to be a system behind his paintings where you almost feel like there is some sort of coded message he is trying to get across. Kaikai Kiki artist Mr. opened his show “Nobody Dies” a week ago at Emmanuel Perrotin (Paris). This protÃ©gÃ© of Takashi Murakami is known for his obviously anime influenced paintings of innocent children in adult situations (not an uncommon theme for Japanese artists it seems).Â Looks like in this show, he tackles themes of war and child soldiers.Â More photos of the opening after the jump.

Lola’s show “The Wondermental” (previewed) opened last Saturday at Corey Helford Gallery. Her paintings looked even more amazing when intricately framed. You just don’t appreciate the size of some of them until you see them in scale. More photos after the jump.

With the DJ spinning and the hipsters of Williamsburg crowded about on Friday night, Ad Hoc Art opened their new show “In Language of Angels”. The six artist show was a nice compliment to the diverse Brooklyn crowd. Seen in the exhibit were: the Manga-esqe Camilla dâ€™Errico, the bold Lisa Alisa, the entrancing Sarah Joncas, the embroidery laced layouts of Simone Maynard, the digitally detailed Mijn Schatje, and the dynamic illustrations of MIA. No matter what your political leanings are, you must still admit these “Sketch for Change” pieces are pretty rad. These auctions are ending one by one as we speak, but don’t worry … they are putting up more for auction everyday. We like the way each artist has incorporated political logos and iconic imagery into each of their pieces. We’re not sure how we missed this… but AM recommends checking out Eric Beltz’s solo show, The Good Land, at Chelsea’s Morgan Lehman Gallery. Beltz creates intricately detailed graphite works on paper filled with allegorical images from American history. The show runs until November 8.
