BMW Art Cars & LACMA Roundup

We stopped by the LACMA with some out-of-town visitors last weekend and were pleasantly surprised to see some old-school custom car collaborations between BMW and some familiar names. What’s that saying… “so old, it’s new?” The Roy Lichtenstein, Robert Rauschenberg, Frank Stella, and Andy Warhol painted BMW Art Cars, a series starting in the 70’s, will be on display in the BP Grand Entrance and can be seen free of admission. A little late notice on our part though, as today is the final day […]

Teaser: Word To Mother @ Stolenspace

Last we saw, Word To Mother was in Hong Kong for a group show marking the launch of Adapta Gallery. His next show appears to be a solo “Lost for Words” at StolenSpace scheduled to open March 19th. This exhibition will feature “paintings in spraypaint and acrylic on wood, canvas, found objects and installation pieces… as well as a release of limited edition wooden boxes hand-made by the artist (contents to be revealed at a later date).” Discuss this show here.

Dr. Sketchy Anti-Art School with Ron English

On Valentine’s Day, Molly Crabapple invited AM to participate in a “life drawing” event called Dr. Sketchy’s Anti-Art School. The guest artist for this session was our friend Ron English. Our first thought was… “There’s going to be a bunch of hardcore artist types sitting with their easels circling a ‘neck-ed’ model. Well, we were wrong…” Dr. Sketchy was anything but… So being the “Anti-Art” school, they hosted the event at a burlesque bar crowded with beautiful people excited to socialize and channel their inner artist. The subject was Ron English’s famous “Cow […]

Shepard Fairey Video – CBS Sunday Morning

Street artist Shepard Fairey was featured in an awesome segment on CBS News Sunday Morning. The video features an in-depth interview, provides a look at his “Supply & Demand” retrospective at ICA Boston (covered), discusses his recent arrest (covered) and legal issues with the AP, and contains some great footage of a young Fairey from the documentary “Andre the Giant Has a Posse.” Note: There is a brief twenty second CBS commercial preceding the video. Discuss Shepard Fairey here.

Preview: Camille Rose Garcia @ SCOPE NY

The magical work of Camille Rose Garcia will be the center of attention for Jonathan Levine’s booth at this years SCOPE art fair in New York. They will be exhibiting new paintings, drawings, and sculpture from CRG as part of a site-specific installation, including a custom wallpaper, designed by the artist herself. Jonathan Levine is also putting together a lecture and discussion panel on March 8th entitled “Private Property, Public Ideas: Street Art in Transition” along with a special screening of the movie “Bomb-It.”  Participants […]

Openings: Natalia Fabia – Hooker DreamEscape @ Corey Helford

After visiting Honor Fraser for KAWS’ solo show, AM headed over to Corey Helford for Natalia Fabia’s (interviewed) “Hooker DreamEscape” (previewed), where we were met again with yet another completely full house and line reaching down the block.  Natalia was in attendance, and was busy the entire night happily chatting with all of her friends and fans. We are sure some of you may have opted to skip the opening and come back to see the art later on in the week rather than wait in […]

Openings: KAWS – The Long Way Home @ Honor Fraser

Fans came out by the hundreds and waited for hours in a line that stretched down La Cienega Blvd. to check out artist and designer KAWS’ latest solo exhibition entitled, “The Long Way Home,” which opened last night at Honor Fraser. Fans loved the latest series of abstractions and were delighted that KAWS was pushing the boundaries of his creativity. This show is the first time there’s nothing identifiable with my aesthetic except the palette and the way it’s painted. There’s no X eyes. I feel […]

Update: Josh Keyes

Josh Keyes recently revealed two new paintings he has completed entitled “Flutter” and “Scorch.” With his participation in the SCOPE NY art fair (which AM will cover) in March and his upcoming solo in May at David B. Smith Gallery, we suspect these will make their appearance at one of these venues. With his predilection for creating works in series, look for him to explore these themes a little more as he fleshes out his new body of work. Discuss Josh Keyes here.

Openings: Brandt Peters @ G1988 LA

AM dropped by Brandt Peters’ solo show “Cackle Factory” (interviewed/previewed) which runs through February 27th at Gallery 1988 LA.  As you will see from the photos, the scuptures and customs round out this body of work nicely.  His unique color palette and details are much more impressive in person so make sure you stop by for a look as there is only one more week left for the exhibition.   See all the photos after the jump.

KAWS x Royal/T Party and Art Exhibition

On the eve before his solo show at Honor Fraser, KAWS kicked things off with, “I Can’t Feel My Face,” a VIP party and art exhibition at Culver City’s Japanese-style maid cafe Royal/T. Party-goers were surrounded with a stunning array of artwork and sculptural pieces from over 25 contemporary artists, hand-picked by KAWS from owner and collector Susan Hancock’s collection. Another huge treat for those in attendance was the OriginalFake pop-up shop set up inside the space, featuring limited edition merchandise and toys, including a […]
