Video: Marilyn Minter – “Green Pink Caviar”

Remember when we stopped by Salon 94 to bring you pics from photographer Marilyn Minter’s latest show Green Pink Caviar. Well, there was also a video that went along with the show (teaser seen above) that has been pretty popular on the internet.  In fact, Madonna (a Minter collector) liked it so much, she’s using it in her “Sticky & Sweet” tour.  “The opening song, ‘Candyshop,’ will be performed under a pair of giant luscious, pink lips licking and sucking on sparkly gold, orange, silver […]

Openings: Nancie Yang @ Ad Hoc Art

The cool thing about Ad Hoc Art is that they always have a separate project area to showcase some not so household names that are emerging from the local art scene. Showing alongside Gaia and Imminent Disaster last Friday was Nancie Yang. Nancie’s work caught our eyes because of her great use of color and female subjects which get your attention. More after the jump.

Openings/Interviews: Word to Mother – “Young Mind, Old Soul” @ FIFTY24SF

On the eve of Word to Mother’s US debut, AM swung by FIFTY24SF to interview the London-based artist.  WTM was kind enough to give a walkthrough of his show, breaking down his creative process, inspirations and the histories of some various pieces.  As an added bonus, WTM signed a few special items for AM readers, more info and a full walk-through after the jump.

Openings: Reuben Rude – “Americana” @ Gallery 1988 (LA)

AM stopped by to take a look at Reuben Rude’s show last weekend at Gallery 1988 (LA), where the “Afternoon with Greg Simkins” event (covered) was being held. He has been hard at work on this show, entitled “Americana,” for over a year. We quite liked the large installation piece (seen above), but also take a look at all the photos after the jump.

Teaser: Whammy! The Art Show @ VASF

Whammy! The Art Show opens next Thursday, July 9th with some pretty good artists in the lineup.  How does Dave Kinsey (above), Anthony Lister (interviewed), Tiffany Bozic, Jeff Soto, John Dwyer, Robert Hardgrave, Mel Kadel, Jay Howell, and Kelsey Brookes sound?  The exhibition will be held at VASF, the RVCA retail flagship on Haight and Ashbuy in San Francisco.

Openings: Vhils – “Scratching The Surface” @ Lazarides (Rathbone Place)

Portuguese street artist Vhils opened his first UK solo show “Scratching The Surface” last night to a packed house at Lazarides Rathbone Place. Vhils employed various mediums and techniques for his amazing portraiture pieces in the show, including stencils, collage and even a few relief pieces like the ones we saw in the video he released a couple of months ago, except this time he used acid and bleach instead of a hammer and chisel. All the photos from the opening after the jump…

Openings: Gaia & Imminent Disaster @ Ad Hoc Art

Last Friday, Ad Hoc Art had a great two-person solo show with Gaia and Imminent Disaster (previewed). The hippest of the Williamsburg crowd made their way out to see a great showing by these two street artists we recently saw in D.C. at the “Street/Studio” experience. For the show, Gaia brought the streets to the gallery with a “outdoor” installation to complement each of his works while Imminent Disaster flexed her muscles by showing off her intricate hand-cut stencils and thought-provoking imagery. All the photos from the opening […]

Preview: Kokeshi Show @ the Japanese American National Museum

A pretty epic customs show is opening on July 11th at the Japanese American National Museum in Los Angeles. Curated by Christina Conway, the exhibition features custom kokeshis from over 100 artists, many well-known to our readers.  We have gathered some images for you of some of our favorites like the one from Stella Im Hultberg (interviewed) seen above. Check them out after the jump…

iArtist DIY Kits

Can’t afford to own a piece of original art of your favorite artist like Damien Hirst?  Why not make your own with these Do-It-Yourself (DIY) kits from iArtist?  What we initially thought was a joke might be for reals, and we are not quite sure to make of it.  Take a look at the Banksy kits they have after the jump…

Preview: Word to Mother – “Young Mind, Old Soul” @ FIFTY24SF

Opening tonight in San Francisco, Word to Mother’s “Young Mind, Old Soul” is looking to be a stellar, and hopefully a breakthrough, US debut for this London based artist.  Hot off the heels of his near sell out show at Stolen Space (which followed “Till the Hot Runs Cold”, a completely sold out show), WTM brought a trunk of originals, salvaged wood, rusty nails and even an exclusive print for his US collectors (teased).  AM swung by the gallery yesterday to chat a bit with […]
