Interviews: Swoon – “The Swimming Cities of Serenissima”

Following the success of Swimming Cities of Switchback Sea (Hudson River, 2008) and the Miss Rockaway Armada (Mississippi River, 2006-2007), Swoon has announced her most ambitious and creative project to date: The Swimming Cities of Serenissima. In May 2009, Swoon will set sail in three intricately hand-crafted vessels built from recycled materials and crewed by 35 fellow artists starting from the Karst region of Slovenia across the Adriatic Sea to their final destination in Venice. The crafts will be developed as the journey progresses and […]

Openings: Todd Schorr – “The World We Live In” @ Merry Karnowsky Gallery

Todd Schorr’s (interviewed) opening last night at Merry Karnowsky was a star-studded event with both celebrity collectors, artists, and paparazzi in full force. You know you aren’t at a normal art event when you are greeted with a red carpet on entrance, and when only media members were allowed to snap pictures. Thankfully, when it was all said and done, the art was the true star of the event. Schorr’s body of work entitled “The World We Live In” delighted viewers with it’s concepts, magnitude, […]

Openings: Lydia Fong, Clare Rojas, Andrew Jeffrey Wright – “American Realities” @ New Image Art

New Image Art packed the house last night with their “American Realities” group show featuring the work of Barry McGee, working under the pseudonym Lydia Fong, his wife Clare Rojas, and their long-time friend and collaborator Andrew Jeffrey Wright. McGee presented some classic pieces containing his iconic figures and continued his exploration of geometric patterns and shape with an installation that encompassed one of the gallery’s walls. Fans were excited that the normally private and reclusive McGee graciously chatted with and signed and sketched for […]

Openings: Joseph “2H” McSween @ Ronin Gallery

Last night marked the opening of Joseph “2H” McSween’s (interviewed) debut Los Angeles solo at the Ronin Gallery. 2H delighted the enthused crowd with a body of work featuring his intriguing female subjects and a vibrant eight foot acrylic and spray paint mural on the gallery’s main wall. AM was impressed with the execution of the pieces, a true testament to 2H’s tremendous artistic and technical growth over the past year. From the piercing eyes of his girls, to the fine balance of colors and […]

Video: Os Gemeos Box from “Vertigo” @ CCBB

Check this video from the spectacular Os Gemeos show at CCBB of Rio de Janerio. One of their signature “Box Head” installations was up in the show. The gorgeous box which measures 64 feet in volume is painted much like the classic Os Gemeos yellow characters. The interactive “Box Head” is suspended a few feet off the ground to encourage the museum goers to “stick their head in” and wear the ginormous mask. Once inside, the viewer is transported to a reflective dimension that resembles space. This effect is created through strategically placed lights along […]

Paintings of a Madman – Adolf Hitler Auction

We recently found out that one world leader’s (Vladamir Putin) painting was worth $1.1 million. Now, another more infamous and more dead former leader’s paintings will be up for auction – Hitler’s. This set of 13 paintings set to go under the hammer next month are expected to sell for a lot less, one of which is seen above. The self portrait of the Nazi leader seen above is signed with the initials A.H. This lot of paintings were from the time when a younger […]

Releases: James Jean – Sally Jupiter (Watchmen) Print

James Jean (interviewed) has this up for sale, a presumably open edition print of Sally Jupiter of an image he created for the Watchmen movie. Although we are still not sure if Warner Bros was behind the Watchmen graffiti that went up in advance of the movie release, they do get credit for recognizing the talent an artist we know and love.  The print is 17 x 22″ and priced at $85. Some concept drawings as well as a screen shot of one of the […]

Openings: Matt Small – “Youngstarrs” @ Black Rat Press Gallery

Romanywg just sent over some images from Matt Small’s (interviewed) show “Youngstarrs” that opened at Black Rat Press Gallery last night (UK time).  This was somewhat of a coming out party for Matt, in our humble opinion, as he was able to show case his talents fully with a diverse and amazing body of work.  Hopefully, he will get the even more deserved recognition after this well-received show. There were many stunning paintings on found objects, but none more so than the showstoppers – large […]
