Showing: Olaf Breuning – “Small Brain Big Stomach” @ Metro Pictures

New York City’s Chelsea may be one of the centers – if not the center – of the art world, but more often than not, if you go there without knowing what you want to see, you’ll spend the day wandering in and out of galleries without seeing much of anything you really cared for. On rare occasions, however, you may just stumble on a show that really blows you away. Luckily, this latter scenario occurred over the weekend, when AM wandered into Metro Pictures […]

50 Parties Art Auction @ Ryan McGinness Studios

On Friday, AM had the pleasure of attending one of Ryan McGinness‘ exclusive 50 Parties events held at his SOHO studio. Given that all the major New York auction houses had held their fall sales during the week, it was appropriate that McGinness’ party that night was itself an auction – but one in which the artists themselves were the sellers, with no auction house taking a commission. Sixteen works were on the block, including pieces by David Ellis, Jose Parla, Cheryl Dunn, Todd “REAS” […]

Openings: “The Good The Bad and The Ugly” @ Gallery Nosco

If you a fan of Alexandros Vasmoulakis and looking forward to his first US solo in March at LeBasse Projects, then “The Good The Bad and The Ugly” group show should serve as a nice appetizer for you. Vasmoulakis, originally from Athens, is primarily known for his street work, particularly the large murals depicting his contorted and slightly abstract figures all painted in his signature illustrative style. The show, which also featured Naomi Doran and Dran opened last week at Gallery Nosco. More images after […]

Along with Biskup, his friend Matt Goldman aka MFG also displayed some of prints. More pics afte the jump…

Openings: Ron English – “Immortal Underground” @ Opera Gallery

On Thursday night, AM attended the VIP opening of Ron English’s “Immortal Underground” at New York’s Opera Gallery. Nothing was spared as Ron’s infamous Cathy Cow Girl’s (courtesy of The Body of Art) arrived in a limo to kick off the opening night extravaganza. In attendance were many of NYC’s notables including Martha Cooper (interviewed), Aiko, Travis Louie (interviewed), Logan Hicks (interviewed), David Stoupakis, Fred Harper, Ally Hilfiger, Johanne Corno and Vincent Castiglia to name a few. The solo was an accumulation of many of […]

Renowned stencil artists Logan Hicks (interviewed) and C215 opened their joint show “Parallel Unverse” at Show & Tell Gallery last week.  For their first show in Canada, the NY based Hicks brings his familiar architectural inspired cityscapes and Parisian artist C215 once again channels emotions from the human subjects he favors. Interestingly enough, the two friends will had some collaborative pieces as well (previewed). More pics after the jump…

Releases: Tyler Stout’s “Inglourious Basterds” Print

Acclaimed poster artist, Tyler Stout, has quietly dropped the few remaining copies of his “Inglourious Basterds” print.  The 24″x36″ six color screenprint was originally released for the VIP opening of the film at the renowned Alamo Drafthouse, which interestingly enough, featured Quintin Tarantino in attendance.  In an effort to raise some funds, Stout has decided to sell his personal stash, including the much sought after variant edition as well as his Artist Proofs.  All four editions are available now in limited quantities through his online […]

Preview: Doktor A – “Freak Machanique” @ Lift Gallery

Doktor A, who is considered by many to be one of the pre-eminent “customizers” out there, is opening his show “Freak Machanique” tonight in Detroit. He has long since shown he that he has many other talents including painting and sculpting.  For this exhibition, he is bringing a new body of his signature steam-punk inspired work (paintings, drawings and three-dimensional pieces) to Lift Gallery including this hand painted and remixed Koibito figure from Yoskay Yamamoto (featured) which he renamed “The Odorous Fish Man.” More preview images he sent us […]

Openings: Liu Ye – “Leave Me in the Dark” @ Sperone Westwater

AM attended the opening of Chinese artist Liu Ye’s latest show “Leave Me in the Dark” at Sperone Westwater Gallery (previewed). Not surprisingly, the online preview images did not do the work justice, as Ye’s minimal compositions and subtle color palette need to be seen in person to be fully appreciated. Although the show does not include any paintings of the European children’s book character Miffy often found in Ye’s early work, a few pieces did include primary color blocks – a common reference of […]

Openings: Amy Sol – “The Wilderness Buffet” @ Copro Gallery

We stopped by to check out the opening of Amy Sol’s (interviewed) show “The Wilderness Buffet” in the large room at Copro Gallery last weekend. While taking in Sol’s new body of work, one can’t help but get drawn into her world of soft colors and and serene landscapes. We couldn’t take our eyes off “Sea Ice Caravel” (above), one of her largest paintings to date and a prime example of the increased detail Sol has put into the pieces for this show. It’s also […]
