Prototype: Jeff Soto’s “Seeker” Figure

Continuing our look at some prototypes for art toys during SDCC week, we now turn our attention to the “Seeker” figure from Jeff Soto (interviewed).  The figure appears to be based on some paintings from his recent Riverside Art Museum show and will be produced by Bigshot Toyworks, the same company producing Travis Louie’s “Uncle Six-Eyes.” Take a look at a video with Soto explaining the figure here, as well as look at some more pics of the protoype and source paintings after the jump.

Openings: “Whammy! The Art Show” @ VASF

Artist friendly clothing company RVCA recently opened their “Whammy! “show (teased) at their retail space/gallery VASF in San Francisco.  Focusing entirely on domestic talent, “Whammy!” features the artwork of such stateside luminaries as Jeff Soto (interviewed), Dave Kinsey, Anthony Lister (interviewed), Kelsey Brookes and Tiffany Bozic, to name a few.  More photos after the jump.

Time Magazine: Top 10 Guerrilla Artists

Who says street art has no cred with the mainstream? Kinda saying a lot when one of the most respected publications in the world takes the time to break out a “Top Ten” list of the top “Guerrilla Artists.” The usual suspects – Jean-Michel Basquiat, Shepard Fairey and Banksy are there. But, we’re surprised that Kaws and his infamous phone booth/bus stop “Ad-Disruptions” didn’t make the list. Check out who did and didn’t made the cut here. Via our friends at TWBE.

Prototype: Travis Louie’s “Uncle Six-Eyes” Figure

With SDCC in full swing, we thought this would be a nice time to review some upcoming art toys from some of our favorite artists. First up is Travis Louie’s (interviewed) first toy, “Uncle Six Eyes,” soon to be released by Bigshot Toyworks. This figure was sculpted by Scott Wetterschneider and stands 8 inches tall. Take a look at some closer pics as well as the painting this figure is based off of after the jump….

Come and get it, fresh off the line. Banksy is serving up “Donuts!” There has been much speculation on when Banksy was going to release a print from his recent Bristol Museum show (covered). Interviews/Preview: Eric Fortune – “Daughters of Our Nature” @ Roq La Rue

“Daughters of Our Nature,” the latest body of work from Eric Fortune opens at Roq La Rue Gallery in Seattle, tomorrow, July 24 from 6-9 PM. AM first spotted Fortune’s work back when he participated in a group show at Copro Gallery last year and we’ve been captivated since by the ethereal feeling of his paintings, which are the product of a time and labor intensive process. We had the pleasure of catching up with Eric ahead of the show to find out more about […]

Highlights: Recommended Openings For July 23-29

Many openings to recommend this week and if you’ll notice, there is a large chunk of our calendar devoted to SDCC as there are many art-related events at the “nerd prom” in San Diego this week. One of our favorite images though (seen above) is from Nicoletta Ceccoli (interviewed) as she opens her two person show with Eric Fortune (interview to follow soon) this Friday at Roq La Rue. Take a look at all the recommended openings after the jump…

Update: Marilyn Minters MAC Collab, Studio Party, and Video

If you recall, we recently showed you the mural that Ai Yamaguchi did for a Shu Uemura store in SF. Continuing on the trend of collaborations between artists and cosmetic companies, Marilyn Minter joins Fafi in promoting the brand MAC, with a campaign starting in August. MAC’s bold and rich colors match up very well Minter’s flashy, gritty and glamorous style as you can see from her latest show at Salon 94 (covered). MAC also recently celebrated their upcoming ad campaign with a party at Minter’s […]
