Second Helpings: April 2009

April definitely did not fool around when it came to artwork. The staff at AM selects some notable stories of the month for the readers in this edition of Second Helpings. Get served after the jump.

Openings: Gary Baseman – “La Noche de la Fusion”

Corey Helford Gallery held a very special collector’s preview of Gary Baseman’s latest exhibition “La Noche de la Fusion.” The amazing “Enlightened Chou” installation was more impressive, once assembled, than when we previewed it in our studio visit. The installation is comprised of many Chous, each one is from a different country: Thailand, India, Mexico, Brazil, Russia. These Chous are Baseman’s way of breaking down the literal boundaries of the modern day countries. The intimate opening was attended by some well-knowns such as Jonathan Levine, Natalia […]

Releases: Naoto Hattori Mini-Paintings

If you took our earlier suggestion to add yourself to Naoto Hattori’s mailing list, you would have seen this painting in the recent batch of mini-paintings he released.  Although Hattori is usually recognized for his paintings of psychedelic influenced figments of his imagination, there is a softer side to his work – hauntingly beautiful females often painted in this statuesque texture. Measuring only 4 x 5 inches, this a perfect example of how much detail he puts into each work. Check out some of the […]

Preview: “Octo Pusses” Group Show & Bast – “Horse Radish” @ New Image Art

New Image Art opens their “Octo Pusses” group exhibition this Saturday, May 2nd. The show includes a nice variety of up-and-comers and established names, featuring the work of Aaron Johnson, Antonio Diaz, Ben Jones, Cleon Peterson, Gino Perez, Judith Supine (studio visit) and Neck Face. Taking over the gallery’s project room with “Horse Radish” is Bast (studio visit), who makes his return to the gallery with a series based on horse jockey collages. Check out the rest of the preview after the jump.

Preview: “the GREAT outDOORS” @ Artbreak Gallery

The most striking, inherent fallacy of street art displayed in a gallery setting is undoubtably the loss of contextual reference for both the viewer and the artist. Just as the adrenaline rush or illegality of street art can never truly be conveyed in a screenprint, the dirt, grime and overall pith and timber of the street can never truly be conveyed on a canvas or for that matter, the internet. It is this intrinsic issue that curators Luna Park and Billikid have attempted to tackle […]

Video/Preview: Logan Hicks & Broken Crow – “Broken Horse” Exhibition

Stencil sensations Logan Hicks and Broken Crow (Mike Fitzsimmons & John Grider) took some time do an interview with AM for their upcoming “drive-by” show “Broken Horse.” The much anticipated urban stencil show will be held in an awesome venue that was once the Hamilton Savings & Loan in Brooklyn, opening tomorrow, May 1st, from 7-11pm. Keep in mind that this show will only be up through the weekend, so be sure to check it out before it closes Sunday. Check out the preview pictures after the jump.

Preview/Interviews: Sam Flores – “Ego, Addiction, and Other Bedtime Stories” @ Subliminal Projects

We had an inkling this would be a strong show from Sam Flores when AM first hooked up last month for a creative process article for his upcoming show.  As we saw more images leaked from his show entitled “Ego, Addiction, and Other Bedtime Stories,” opening this Saturday, May 2nd at Subliminal Projects, we became more and more excited about this body of work. Flores really pushed himself creating works for this exhibition.  As he puts it: “this new show is a transformation.  I wanted […]

Preview/Video: Yoskay Yamamoto – “Hello and Goodbye” @ LeBasse Projects

Our friends at Modus Films put together a nice preview video showcasing some of the beautiful new pieces for Yoskay Yamamoto’s (interviewed) upcoming show “Hello and Goodbye” (teased) opening on May 9th at LeBasse Projects in Culver City. Discuss this show here. Discuss Yoskay Yamamoto here.

Openings: Banksy @ Andipa Gallery

Stop and get it fresh – Banksy at Andipa Gallery! This past weekend, Andipa held an exhibition of some elite secondary market canvases by the Bristol Bomber. From what we see, the show was filled with not only grade A images, but they were also in great shape/condition, which is uncommon considering many of his pieces were stenciled on “urban” materials. This is a rare chance for you to see such a diverse collection of Banksy’s work in one place.  So, if you’re in London, you should definitely make it a […]

Showing: Damien Hirst – “Requiem” @ Pinchuk Art Centre (Kiev, Ukraine)

Billed as the largest collection of Damien Hirst’s work ever exhibited, the show “Requiem” opened at Pinchuk Art Centre last Saturday, April 25th in Kiev, Ukraine. Hirst will be showing his retrospective of over 100 works dating from 1990 to 2008 at steel billionaire Victor Pinchuk’s namesake museum including not only the sculptures and installations that he is famous for, but also a collection of oil paintings, most of which have never been exhibited. For those unable to attend the show (probably all of you, […]
