Preview: Cleon Peterson – ‘Daybreak’ @ New Image Art

The art of Cleon Peterson has never been for the fainthearted. Like Pieter Bruegel the Elder‘s painting The Triumph of Death, his unapologetic, graphic depictions of acts of brutality are both disquieting and strangely captivating. Daybreak is the artist’s latest solo show opening this Saturday, November 20th at New Image Art Gallery. The exhibition, which draws inspiration and its title from Nietzsche’s Daybreak: Reflections on Moral Prejudices, marks Peterson’s powerful return with another morally ambiguous and beautifully composed orgy of violence. See our preview of […]

Streets: Aiko (New York)

It looks like Aiko recently completed a new mural in the Bronx. The wall references much of her recent imagery as well as big “Bunny” tag. If you are in NY, head over the 163rd and Park Ave and take a look for yourself.  More photos after the jump…

Teaser: Travis Louie – “The Ghost of Delilah and Other Stories” @ Gallery 1988 (Melrose)

Coming up in early December, Travis Louie (featured) will be starting off your holiday season with a solo show at Gallery 1988 (Melrose). Notice that we say Melrose and not Los Angeles because the gallery will be opening up a second space in Venice very shortly and will be closing their branch in San Francisco. We are looking forward to seeing Travis’ new body of work and from the octopus tentacles we see peeking out, he might be bringing something a little different. Discuss this […]

Teaser: Basel Week Miami ’10 – “Urban Alchemists” @ Jonathan LeVine Gallery

With Art Basel Miami Beach swiftly approaching more and more details are beginning to surface from galleries involved in the new contemporary and street art movements. To coincide with this years event, Jonathan LeVine Gallery will be taking over a cavernous 2,200 square-foot space in the Wynwood Walls section, which last year was a successful inaugural run at an outdoor mural space within the fair conceived of by legendary Jeffrey Deitch and which will now become a permanent fixture for street artists to showcase their […]

Showing: Josh Keyes – “Collision” @ David B. Smith Gallery

Unfortunately, for the vast majority of the Josh Keyes fans who don’t live in Colorado (like us), seeing the new body of work entitled “Collision” in person will not be possible (unless you bought one). However, we are lucky that there are some exhibition photos of the beautiful pieces in situ at the David B. Smith Gallery through December 11th. The ten paintings in this show were conceived and based on a complex 16th century mythology (explained in detail in our recent interview with Josh) […]

Streets: Hush – “Found” with White Walls in New York

Hush (interviewed) is in the Big Apple and already making his mark on the Lower East Side. In preparation for his upcoming show “Found” on Friday (Nov 19th) at the White Walls‘ pop up location of Angel Orensanz Foundation For Contemporary Art, the UK street artist is busy elevating his exposure to the streets of New York. Braving windy conditions of up to 50 mph, AM and Hush caught a (legit) wall on the corner of Stanton & Norfolk to display a live painting session of one of […]

Openings: Aakash Nihalani – “Overlap” @ Bose Pacia

A couple weeks ago, Aakash Nihalani’s geometric forms took over the Bose Pacia space in New York. Aakash’s work has certainly progressed from the tape work that initially made his name. The increasingly complex sculptural pieces certainly bring to mind the techniques and imagery of the street pieces they reference, but in a more refined way – a perfect transition to the indoors. More photos after the jump…

Openings: Brian Donnelly – “Obedience & Savagery” @ Show & Tell Gallery

It’s always exciting for us to see emerging artists we enjoy pushing the boat out and really delivering solid showings of work. AM recently brought you a glimpse of what Toronto based artist Brian Donnelly was bringing to his solo exhibition “Obedience and Savagery”, which opened last week at Show & Tell Gallery, and after seeing these preview images we had high hopes for the rest of the work. Donnelly’s animal/human mash-ups were shown alongside Winnie Truong’s delicate coloured pencil work in the form of […]
