Openings: POW WOW ’11

The weeks of setup for the POW WOW ’11 in Honolulu culminated in blowout showcase bringing together talent from different parts of the world. People all over Hawaii came to take part in the celebration where performance, photography, graffiti, and fine art intersected. Banksy x Simpsons (Part II) and Oscar Update (Part III)

After taking a brilliant turn as the director of the Simpsons’ opening sequence, Banksy returns as a reference in the last episode (22×14) as a timely tag backstage as America’s favorite animated family makes an appearance at the Oscars. Streets: JR (Los Angeles) Part II

As we reported earlier, French street activist and photographer JR is continuing his assault on the walls of LA since starting with a mural in Venice last week. LA weekly is following his progress in bringing his “The Wrinkles of the City” to Socal on their website (map) and this is the latest piece at Barracuda in Melrose. This newest project will lead in nicely to the TED Prize award show on March 2 (live streaming) where he will reveal his “wish.” Discuss JR here.

For those of you lucky enough to have today off work in the States, here is Ron English’s (featured) salute to the Presidents’ Day holiday. George Washington never looked better remixed with some comics and modified dollar bills. For those of you who missed Ron’s recent solos in New York and the LA area, he’s scheduled for another show in Texas at the end of March at the International Museum of Arts and Sciences. For those waiting patiently for the next Audrey Kawasaki (interviewed) print release, your patience will be rewarded this Sunday, February 27th, if you are quick enough. “She Entwined”, from her recent set of shows in Australia (covered), will be in an edition of 300 (unframed $200 & framed $460) and released as usual on her webshop at 1:00pm pacific time (more details here). Looks like Retna’s not the only one into painting aircraft. Phlegm recently enhanced this old Soviet fighter jet, a Sukhoi Su-17 with some of his signature imagery. Last Fall, AM caught an excellent exhibition at the Brooklyn Museum. The show entitled Andy Warhol: The Last Decade was an epic collection culled from the last 10 years of the famed artist’s illustrious career. The survey included almost 50 large scale works that demonstrated the newer styles which Andy Warhol incorporated into his already diverse repertoire in the latter part of his life.
