Armory Week ’11 – KAWS @ Honor Fraser

Tondo… That was the word of the week that Honor Fraser taught us about their Armory booth featuring Kaws. Tondo is the term for the round canvases which dazzled passerby’s at the blue chip art fair. At the center of the showcase, an impressive “Tondo Wall” was created using 21 round canvases. Each piece featured a different expression set in a distinct minimalist fashion and together the installation worked to convey a possible sequence or gamut of emotion. Titi Freak was back into installation mode in the UK last week for his showing with OneThirty3 up in Newcastle.The premise of the space is simple – bring over an exciting roster of artists to rip it up in Hush’s studio space so that they can replicate their street aesthetic indoors. Showing with Jonathan LeVine at the VOLTA satellite fair (also see Mark Jenkins & Richard Colman) at this year’s Armory Week will be Jim Houser. Judging from all the setup action we see, attendees can look forward to very nice installation which is typical for the Philadelphia-based artist (ie last year’s Subliminal Projects show). AM loves his quilt-like blocks of imagery and look forward to seeing new symbology added to his lexicon.

We last talked to Kris Lewis (interviewed) at last year’s Grammy group show which he co-curated and also in 2009 before his show at David B. Smith Gallery. Time flies as he’s scheduled again for a solo exhibition in May at the Colorado showspace with a new body of work; the piece above being the first piece we have seen. Following a brief stint alongside Brad Downey and Vhils in Lisbon, Portugal as part of the ongoing and impressive Crono project (featured here and here), MOMO arranged a short stay in the UK before heading back earlier this week to his latest base in security-challenged New Orleans. George Thompson, also known as EWOK, recently unveiled a solo exhibition of works at LA’s own Known Gallery. The show is centered around a world where the Ku Klux Klan plays competitive organized basketball. Although the artist has played with the idea before in pieces that have been included in group shows, he wanted to expand it further and continue the conversation in a full-scale exhibition. We recently attended the absolutely packed opening of Marcel Dzama’s latest solo show at David Zwirner, entitled Behind Every Curtain. As promised, the exhibition featured Dzama’s signature watercolor works on paper and dioramas, but also included some amazing life-sized figurative sculptures, as well as sketches and renderings for his movie A Game of Chess. One of the most captivating pieces of the show was the rotating carousel of metal robot characters, which really captured the whimsy and imagination that make Dzama such a favorite. See […]
