Armory Week ’11 – KAWS @ Honor Fraser

Tondo… That was the word of the week that Honor Fraser taught us about their Armory booth featuring Kaws. Tondo is the term for the round canvases which dazzled passerby’s at the blue chip art fair. At the center of the showcase, an impressive “Tondo Wall” was created using 21 round canvases. Each piece featured a different expression set in a distinct minimalist fashion and together the installation worked to convey a possible sequence or gamut of emotion. Conceptually, it seems that Kaws is integrating […]

Preview: Marilyn Minter – “Paintings from the 80s” @ Team Gallery

About 30 years before her inclusion in the 2006 Whitney Biennial and the appearance of her work on billboards in Chelsea, Marilyn Minter was already exploring issues of sexuality, glamor, fashion, the body, and commodification.   See the genesis of what has progressed to become her signature bold, hyper-realistic close-ups of glamorous and sexy lips, tongues, and other body parts at her show opening March 31 at Team Gallery.  Paintings from the 80s includes pieces created earlier in the artist’s career (in the 1980s surprisingly) […]

Openings: Titi Freak @ OneThirty3, Newcastle

Titi Freak was back into installation mode in the UK last week for his showing with OneThirty3 up in Newcastle. The premise of the space is simple – bring over an exciting roster of artists to rip it up in Hush’s studio space so that they can replicate their street aesthetic indoors. Titi Freak was the first artist invited over to make his site specific installation. Organised and curated by Hush and his wife Rachael, the warehouse studio space of OneThirty3 provides artists the freedom to […]

Teaser / Setup: Armory Week ’11 – Jim Houser (Jonathan LeVine booth @ VOLTA)

Showing with Jonathan LeVine at the VOLTA satellite fair (also see Mark Jenkins & Richard Colman) at this year’s Armory Week will be Jim Houser. Judging from all the setup action we see, attendees can look forward to very nice installation which is typical for the Philadelphia-based artist (ie last year’s Subliminal Projects show).  AM loves his quilt-like blocks of imagery and look forward to seeing new symbology added to his lexicon.

Teaser: Kris Lewis @ David B. Smith Gallery

We last talked to Kris Lewis (interviewed) at last year’s Grammy group show which he co-curated and also in 2009 before his show at David B. Smith Gallery. Time flies as he’s scheduled again for a solo exhibition in May at the Colorado showspace with a new body of work; the piece above being the first piece we have seen.  If that is any indication, we are in for a great show.  We’ll have more to follow as the show draws nearer. Discuss Kris Lewis […]

Teaser: Armory Week ’11 – Richard Colman – “Can’t Get There From Here” (V1 booth @ VOLTA)

With Armory Week in New York set to start tomorrow, we wanted to let you know about a couple more artists to look out for.  Take a look at this floor piece for an install Richard Colman (interviewed) has planned for the V1 booth at VOLTA. If you remember, it looks like the same one he used for his immersive show at Guerrero Gallery back in October. Keep it locked on AM of course as we will be bringing you on-site coverage of all the […]

Streets: MOMO in London

Following a brief stint alongside Brad Downey and Vhils in Lisbon, Portugal as part of the ongoing and impressive Crono project (featured here and here), MOMO arranged a short stay in the UK before heading back earlier this week to his latest base in security-challenged New Orleans. For want of a more appropriate euphemism, it was an interesting few days at the AM London residence. The artist’s arrival overlapped with a visit by Christian Coinbergh’s “Gang of Three” from Stockholm – the latter in town […]

Openings: George Thompson – “Revisionist History” @ Known Gallery

George Thompson, also known as EWOK, recently unveiled a solo exhibition of works at LA’s own Known Gallery.  The show is centered around a world where the Ku Klux Klan plays competitive organized basketball. Although the artist has played with the idea before in pieces that have been included in group shows, he wanted to expand it further and continue the conversation in a full-scale exhibition.  Thompson feels that although racism still exists in today’s society, it is rarely directly addressed.  The juxtaposition shown in […]

Openings: David Choe x George Thompson – New Works @ Known Gallery

Opening along with George Thompson’s Revisionist History at Known Gallery was a exhibition of new works by David Choe (featured) [edit: according to David Choe’s blog, these are collaborative pieces with George Thompson].  The artist took a break from his figurative images of city dwelling ladies and angry red colors to explore a different painterly direction (although if you look hard enough, you might be able to make out some tits, cocks, and assholes in some of the works).  Consisting of large works in black […]

Openings: Marcel Dzama – “Behind Every Curtain” @ David Zwirner

We recently attended the absolutely packed opening of Marcel Dzama’s latest solo show at David Zwirner, entitled Behind Every Curtain. As promised, the exhibition featured Dzama’s signature watercolor works on paper and dioramas, but also included some amazing life-sized figurative sculptures, as well as sketches and renderings for his movie A Game of Chess. One of  the most captivating pieces of the show was the rotating carousel of metal robot characters, which really captured the whimsy and imagination that make Dzama such a favorite. See […]
