Streets: Cyrcle. (Los Angeles)

Last week, the artist collective known as Cyrcle. (featured) painted a mural in the midst of Culver City, California. Keeping the same theme of We Never Die, which was highlighted during their solo show a couple months ago, the group showed that they can smoothly move from the gallery space to the streets and back. The entire mural was a week long process but the results were of interest to anyone who drove by the building complex. The mural project spearheaded by Branded Arts which […]

Streets: Blu (Greece)

As Greece moves towards an inevitable default, likely pulling the rest of the world into a double-dip recession, Blu lands in town to give his special commentary on the subject. There seems no end to his Euro road trip as he has made his way to and from countries and cities like Italy, Bologna, Palestra, Jesi, Krakow, Poznań, Fabriano, Cologne, Grottaglie, Valencia, Italy, and Spain again. Now, he hits another home run with this poignant new mural that proves once again a painting is worth a thousand […]

Nuart Festival ’11: Phlegm

Another great curatorial choice for Nuart Festival is rising star Phlegm, who traveled from his home base of Sheffield for this year’s event. For his part, he painted a nice mural on the side of a derelict building featuring his signature affection for all things airborne and also filled an entire room with his creatures and characters in a strange, almost evolutionary, lineup. More photos after the jump thanks to Henrik Haven…

Videos / Contests: Schwartzman x Baldessari for Pacific Standard Time

Starting in October 2011, 60 cultural institutions across Southern California will be joining forces to support Pacific Standard Time: Art in L.A. from 1945 to 1980 with programming, events, and exhibitions that tell the progression of the L.A. art scene as well as the worlds of music, film and architecture. As part of the associated awareness campaign, a series of videos have been launched including one where Anthony Kiedis takes Ed Ruscha on a ride down Sunset Blvd. Well, the unexpected pairings continue with the […]

Art Platform ’11: RETNA @ New Image Art

Building on the momentum of high profile projects he has been linked to recently (see Chanel, Heal the Bay, VistaJet, and WeHo Library), street calligraphist RETNA (featured) brought his work to Art Platform over the weekend. Showing with New Image Art, the LA-based writer shared various monochromatic large scale works on paper and canvas with fairgoers. More photos after the jump taken for us by Carlos Gonzalez.

Openings: Daniel Askill – “Three Rituals” @ PRISM

Last week, Daniel Askill debuted his Los Angeles exhibition over at the Prism gallery, showing alongside David LaChapelle (covered). Entitled Three Rituals, the body or work centered around a variety of photographs and video installations that explore the thematic elements of vast empty spaces and how they relate and contrast with the lone individual. Featuring photos that carried a great sense of composition, the viewer was presented with what may have seen a simplistic approach. However, on closer inspection, this simplicity is what gives the […]

Studio Visit: Tim Biskup – “Former State” @ THIS Gallery

Last time we ran into artist extraordinaire Tim Biskup, it was during the Heroes & Villains book signing (c0vered). However, this time around, AM was fortunate enough to visit his studio and get an in-depth look into his creative space and the hard work that’s been taking place in preparation for his next show. Entitled Former State, the new collection of paintings & sculptures will be presented October 14th at THIS Gallery in Los Angeles. The paintings will utilize the polygonal style he has mastered […]

Streets: Olek – Astor Place Cube (New York)

Agata Oleksiak aka Olek, who recently held a solo show in New York, took her guerrilla crocheting into the public domain several days ago in support of the Occupy Wall Street protests. Putting her knitting skills on overdrive, she covered the Alamo sculpture in NY, also known as the Astor Place Cube, with a colorful patchwork of yarn with embedded messages. This will not be her first high profile public intervention, if you remember, as she burst onto the scene last year by taking on […]

Nuart Festival ’11: Herakut

With the Nuart Festival in full swing in Norway, the next artists to grace the walls of Stavenger are German duo Herakut. The creative blend of Hera’s loose and more abstract elements with Akut’s photorealistic skills is a special aesthetic that can’t be duplicated. They took time to work on a large wall (with the assistance of a mechanical crane) as well as an immersive installation that took over an entire room. More photos after the jump from Henrik Haven.

PULSE Los Angeles ’11: First Look

With Art Platform in town, the PULSE art fair also decided to hold their Los Angeles event the same weekend. Featuring a mix established and emerging galleries, attendees are giving a nice variety of young and veteran artists.  Also associated with the fair is Pulse Projects, which included installations from participants such as Mike Stilkey, Jen Stark, and Kevin Cyr along with murals from Greg Lamarche and Dave Kinsey (covered).
