Previews: “Conjoined 2” @ Copro Gallery

Fans of sculptural work, be sure to show up tomorrow night at the Copro Gallery for the Conjoined II exhibition, a sequel to last year’s showing. Not only will Chet Zar’s (interviewed) fantastic new bronze, The Dead Pope, be on display, a diverse roster of artists will be presenting their three-dimensional creations as well. Streets: David Choe, DVS-1, Joseph To (Denver)

After hitting up the new Facebook headquarters at the behest of Mark Zuckerberg, David Choe (featured) headed over to Mile-High City for the Terminal Kings project at the Denver International Airport. While that event (more on this later) also features the work of Sam Flores and Highgraff, David also brought along his friends, artists DVS-1 and Joseph To, to get in on the fun with some high energy collaborations. Not too long ago, the collaboration between artists El Mac and Augustine Kofie (featured) produced a spectacular mural that took place at the KROQ studios in Los Angeles, California (covered). It was a project which greatly combined the talent of these two artists to produce a music-themed mural. Openings: Chris Burden – “Metropolis II” @ LACMA

Last week, Chris Burden’s epic kinetic sculpture, Metropolis II, was revealed to the public at the LACMA. The complex and frenetic creation from the LA-based artist took four years to complete and is a model of a miniature city with an emphasis on an intricate transportation system. Included are 18 roadways, including one 6 lane freeway, train tracks, miniature cars, a network of buildings, which support the equivalent of approximately 100,000 cars circulating every hour. Following our earlier coverage largely restricted to original works at London Art Fair, AM is back with a selection of the limited edition prints and other multiples we spotted at Tuesday’s opening. Among the more obvious highly-desirables were a couple of screenprints from the 1960s: Sandra by the recently-deceased Gerald Laing and Untitled (La Lune en Rodage – Carlo Belloli) by Bridget Riley, both at the Sims Reed Gallery booth. Last weekend, the Jonathan LeVine Gallery kicked off the new year with two fresh shows. First was an exhibition curated by one of our favorite street art blogs – the Wooster Collective. Entitled Hybrid Thinking, the group show featured great works from DAL, Herakut, HYURO, ROA, SIT and VINZ. Moving to the next stop in our tour of Damien Hirst’s iconic work in his The Complete Spot Paintings 1986–2011 retrospective occurring across the globe at all branches of the Gagosian, we turn out eyes to Athens. In contrast to the vast Beverly Hill space, the smaller Greek outpost gave us an intimate look at the YBA’s well recognized dotted paintings. More after the jump.

Recently, Thinkspace hosted the work of Allison S0mmers (interviewed) in an exhibition titled Potter’s Field alongside the showing from Esao Andrews (covered). The new body of work showed off Sommers’ unique perspective on themes such as war, violence, and the way these factors affect the human being. Her illustrations invite the viewer to study it up close and although the artworks may not seem large in size, the small details she infuses into her artwork add another level of dimensionality which is hard not to notice. Late last year during the holidays, we brought you pictures from Dabs Myla‘s latest mural which took place in the Culver City of Los Angeles (covered). It turns out the project (set up through Branded Arts and Thinkspace Gallery) has a story behind it that could be just as interesting as the aesthetic value of the mural itself. Openings: London Art Fair 2012 (Part I)

On Tuesday, AM attended the opening of London Art Fair, an event that focuses on modern British and contemporary art, held at the Business Design Centre in Islington. In terms of overall presentation, the most attractive and cohesive booth for us this year is by London’s Hazlitt Holland-Hibbert, featuring works by Bridget Riley, Anthony Caro and Kenneth Armitage.
