Openings: Shannon Bonatakis – “Now I Lay Me Down To Sleep” @ Rivet Gallery

Shannon Bonatakis is a painter living among the blissful fairy-tale forests of Denver, Colorado. When she is not climbing her favorite tree she is spending her days juggling various illustration projects, and her nights huddled over wet canvas (most likely painting by candle-light). Having been acquainted with Shannon’s brush work for many years now, we can comfortably say without question, this girl puts painstaking hours into refining each piece she pushes out. Her solo show, titled Now I Lay Me Down To Sleep is up at Rivet Gallery and […]

Openings: Nathan Ota – “Pop! Goes the Weasel” @ La Luz de Jesus

Earlier this month, AM paid a visit to La Luz de Jesus to check out the opening of Pop! Goes the Weasel, Nathan Ota’s new show in Los Angeles. The well attended event featured whimsical paintings from the LA-based artist full of imagery that appear often in his work such as birds, tree creatures, vibrant colors, and lettering proclaiming his graffiti roots. Stop by before the exhibition closes on December 2nd if you want to see it in person. Discuss Nathan Ota here.

Preview / Setup: Ben Eine – “Color by Colour” Group Show @ Charles Banks Gallery

We first got acquainted with Ben Eine in the 2005 holiday tradition known as Santa’s Ghetto. Since then Ben has traveled the globe putting his clever alphabetical color combinations up for the whole world to see (fans include Prime Minister Cameron who sent over a painting to the Obama’s, welcoming the first family into the White House). Most recently Ben has been working like an elf during Christmas gearing up for the group show he’s participating in at the Charles Banks Gallery. He has been linked up with an […]

Studio Visit: Brian Viveros – “War of the Roses” @ SCOPE / Thinkspace

With Basel Week Miami mere days away, it’s time to start giving you an idea of what to expect from this year’s event. We recently stopped by the studio of Brian Viveros to check out some of the paintings he will be shipping to the SCOPE Fair that will be displayed at the Thinkspace booth. War of the Roses will feature much of the imagery that fans of Viveros’ work have come to appreciate – strong female characters, reference to Spanish culture, tobacco, military themes, […]

Upcoming / Streets: Vhils – “Devoid” @ Lazarides (Rathbone Place)

With the general opening set for November 29th, Lazarides (Rathbone Place) is ready to present Vhils’ (filmed) first solo with the gallery in over three years. Devoid will be the Portuguese artist’s most comprehensive show to date and feature work that examines the relationship between the individual and the overwhelming force of urban environments, sourcing much of his materials from derelict spaces in the city. Many of the new pieces will reference projects the forceful street agent completed in 2012 in places like Shanghai, Paris, the favelas of Rio and […]

Showing: William Klein + Daido Moriyama @ Tate Modern

The Tate Modern in London recently brought together William Klein (New York) and Daido Moriyama (Tokyo), two of the most iconic photograpers and film-makers of the 20th century, for an excellent retrospective. Experimental photography, film, graphic design and the role of the photo book are the main focus of both artists. With their blurred and grainy style of photography they were able capture some poignant moments of street photography which became the benchmark for future generations in contemporary photography. While visiting the exhibition, don’t miss out on Klein’s […]

Overtime: Nov 19 – Nov 25

Overtime stories of the week: Phlegm working through possible covers for his new book. RIP: Arnaud Maggs, who died at the age of 86. Congratulations: Julian Schnabel and The Hole’s May Andersen get engaged. An insightful look at the market for Damien Hirst works and how he may have damaged it with his actions. Sotheby’s posted a pre-tax loss of $46.4m, representing a 58% fall in net profits for first nine months of year. Per ArtTactic, confidence in the Chinese contemporary art market declines as […]

A couple weeks ago, the Quint Contemporary Art in San Diego hosted all new works from local artist Kelsey Brookes. Entitled Serotonin; Happiness and Spiritual States, the show featured his representations of various neurotransmitter molecules colored with the various intereactions they have on our mental status. The vibrant and colorful patterns were repeated over a series of small, medium, and large paintings. Openings: Trenton Doyle Hancock – “… And Then It All Came Back To Me” @ James Cohan

Recently, the James Cohan Gallery hosted Trenton Doyle Hancock‘s show, appropriately titled …And Then It All Came Back To Me. This is an incredible body of work, and as timing sometimes goes, brought out the ‘best of the best’ in the post Sandy NYC Chelsea arts district. This exhibit focuses hard on thickly layered mixed-media works, installations, with a slice of taxidermy folklore – the entire collection of work seemingly very emotionally charged. “Word-plays, palindromes, maxims and proverbs” add to the the visual imagery and set the […]

Preview: Yigal Ozeri – “Territory” @ Mike Weiss Gallery

We’ve seen some of Yigal Ozeri’s striking photo-realistic oil paintings at various art fairs in the past, but have never witnessed a full body of work. That will all change on November 29th when the Israeli artist opens Territory at the Mike Weiss Gallery in New York. Featuring his largest portraits to date, the new series of works depicts a female Israeli soldier, in both military uniform or in contemporary dress, set against a ocean landscape. Ozeri’s skill lies in his ability to capture emotion and […]
