It looks like Shepard Fairey (featured) has created a new print as a tribute to Ai Weiwei ahead of the Chinese artist’s show opening soon at the Brooklyn Museum. The portrait is created with Shep’s signature style and features a gash on the activist-artist’s scalp alluding to his time in the Chinese police’s hands back in 2010. As a result of that incident, AWW’s passport was confiscated and he has been unable to travel, including to show openings like the upcoming one in New York.
The edition is created in collaboration with Friends of Ai Weiwei, made possible with Pace Prints, where funds from the sale will be used to promote awareness of the artist’s legal status as well as support their goals of promoting free speech and other artistic initiatives. Produced in a run of 350, the museum will be selling 100 of these in association with the exhibition.
