Last weekend, the Marciano Art Foundation opened an new expansive show from Ai Weiwei, his first major institutional exhibition in Los Angeles. Entitled Life Cycle, the showing includes old and new pieces, as well as a reworking of older concepts and techniques from the Chinese artist. Releases: Ai Weiwei x Public Art Fund – Sculptural & Print Edition

Later this month, Ai Weiwei will be opening an ambitious project in New York where he will be creating site specific works as well as a series of 200 banners that will be placed on lampposts in all five boroughs. Currently at Deitch Projects in New York through December 23rd, Ai Weiwei has an immersive installation on view entitled Laundromat. Continuing to address the refugee crisis in Europe, the Chinese artist (once a refugee himself) has filled the large space with garments, shoes, and personal effects that he acquired from the refugee camps housing Syrian immigrants near the border of Greece, along with snippets of media coverage and photos he took. Streets: Ai Weiwei – “Reframe” @ Palazzo Strozzi (Florence)

Over the weekend, Ai Weiwei unveiled a provocative new installation on the facade of Palazzo Strozzi in Florence which continues his commentary on the current refugee crisis in Europe. Entitled Reframe, the Chinese artist’s latest public work will features 22 life rafts attached to the historic building’s windows, a striking critique of the handling of the humanitarian crisis. In his continuing effort to raise awareness about the refugee crisis, Ai Weiwei recently installed a new piece at Vienna’s Belvedere Palace as a part of his first solo exhibition in Austria, translocation – transformation. Titled F Lotus the piece consists of 201 rings with 5 life jackets on each, floating like lotus flowers and forming a big letter F. The disturbing photo of the Syrian child Alan Kurdi laying drowned on the beach has become an a rallying point for those concerned about the refugee crisis. Chinese artist and dissident Ai Weiwei recently posed as the boy for a photograph shot by Rohit Chawla for an upcoming issue of one of India’s largest news publications – India Today. In July 2015, Chinese artist and activist Ai Weiwei finally got his passport back four years after Chinese authorities seized it preventing him from leaving the country. In recent months, he’s been traveling around Europe, from UK to Greece, where he visited the refugee camp on Lesbos and set up a studio there.
