Videos: Ai Weiwei Covers Psy’s “Gangnam Style”

It looks like Chinese contemporary artist and political dissident Ai Weiwei recently released a parody video of the viral video sensation Gangnam Style. In this cover of Psy’s smash hit, the footage alternates from actual scenes from the music video to AWW and his studio staff dancing to the song including the now-famous horse dance moves. As to the reason for the remix – perhaps the title “Grass-Mud Horse Style” gives a clue as it is a reference to a Chinese Internet meme that uses a pun that […]

Ai Weiwei x Herzog & de Meuron Serpentine Pavilion Complete

Recently, the 12th commissioned architectural project of an annual series from the Serpentine Gallery opened to the public. The 2012 piece was a collaboration between famous Chinese artist Ai Weiwei and Herzog & de Meuron, the same team that was responsible for the celebrated Beijing National Stadium which was built for the 2008 Olympic Games. The 12th Serpentine Galley Pavilion will be presented as part of the London 2012 Festival and consists of a plane of water floating above a sunken recess in the lawn […]

There’s also a huge flower sculpture, Split Rocker, in the garden of the museum. This video from Vernissage TV boasts footage of the entire show as well as a talk with curator Dr. Theodora Vischer. Other than this featured video, other notables for the […]

Showing: Ai Weiwei – “absent” @ Taipei Fine Arts Museum (Part III)

Wrapping up the third and final part (see Part I and Part II) of our look at Ai Weiwei’s comprehensive retrospective at the Taipei Fine Arts Museum (TFAM), we bring you a robust collection of photographs taken by the artist in the 1980s (split into two periods – New York and Beijing East Village). In the first series of photos, we see the “old New York” from the view point of a fresh Chinese immigrant including the social unrest & riots of the time. The second series […]

Openings: Ai Weiwei – “Sunflower Seeds” @ Mary Boone Gallery

Last week, the Mary Boone Gallery hosted the largest collection of Ai Weiwei’s Sunflower Seeds that we have seen since his triumphant exhibition in London at the Tate Modern in 2010. Although much smaller in scale when compared to that museum showing which included 100 million pieces, seeing so many of these tiny porcelain seeds piled together really gives the viewer a sense of the amazing amount of work that went into the production. The original exhibition took 1,600 skilled artisan, supervised by the recent TIME Person […]

Teaser / Video: Ai Weiwei – “Sunflower Seeds” @ Mary Boone Gallery

For those who missed the recent museum exhibition from Ai Weiwei in Taiwan (including the stunning bicycle sculptural masterpiece), don’t despair. The next chance to catch work from the Chinese artist and recent TIME Person of the Year runner-up is coming up in New York this Saturday, January 7th. Mary Boone Gallery will be hosting his iconic Sunflower Seeds installation, which first blew our minds back in 2010 when we visited the Tate Modern in London. “The sunflower, with its destiny to follow the sun, became a […]

Showing: Ai Weiwei – “absent” @ Taipei Fine Arts Museum (Part II)

In Part I of our visit to Taiwan to catch Ai Weiwei’s exhibition Absent at the TFAM, we gave you a look at the impressive sampling of the Chinese artist’s works from the early 80s to present day. Of course, AWW isn’t a man that rests on his laurels as he’s constantly looking at life from his unique artistic viewpoint, which brings us to his Forever Bicycles installation, a unique and completely new work created especially for the Taiwan museum. This sculptural piece puts together 1,000 […]

Openings: Ai Weiwei – “absent” @ Taipei Fine Arts Museum (Part I)

AM recently visited Taiwan to catch  Ai Weiwei’s absent exhibition at the TFAM (Taipei Fine Arts Museum). As the show’s title implies, Ai Weiwei was not present for the opening as he’s still working on clearing his previous “issues” with his home country’s government. This museum show of the controversial Chinese artist is practically a retrospective ,with spanning works from 1983-present, giving the people of Taiwan a taste of the talent and unique point of view that Ai brings to the table. The showing encompasses a broad […]
