Basel Week Miami ’13: Rubell Family Collection – “28 Chinese”

While down in Miami for Art Basel Week, we took the opportunity to check out 28 Chinese, the current exhibition at the Rubell Family Collection. For those on their way to this year’s Art Basel Week in Miami, you may want to check out the new Perez Art Museum Miami (formerly know as the Miami Art Museum) in a new Herzog & de Meuron designed building. Coincidentally, an artist, Ai Weiwei, that has collaborated with the Swiss architecture firm in the past will be showing at the museum. Showing: Ai Weiwei – “Forever Bicycles” @ Scotiabank Nuit Blanche

Currently in Toronto’s Nathan Phillips Square, Ai Weiwei’s Forever Bicycles installation is on display 24 hours a day until October 27th. The piece consisting of 3,144 bicycles is in town for the Scotiabank Nuit Blanche, an annual celebration of contemporary art in the largest city of Canada. Releases: Ai Weiwei TheSK8room Skateboards

Joining an impressive lineup of artists to have collaborated with TheSK8room on limited edition skateboard decks, Ai Weiwei has released three different versions recently. Featuring graphics and quotes form the Chinese contemporary artist, the three designs are limited to a run of 150 each and retail for € 300,00. Seen displayed in the company’s Brussels showroom above, the numbered skateboards (with printed signature) will be sold to partially support a good cause with 20% of all sales going towards Skateistan. After coming in as the runner-up for TIME magazine’s Person of the Year in 2011, things of come full circle for Ai Weiwei. The latest issue of the magazine features an illustration from the Chinese artist – activist with the title “The World According To China” overlaid on an oversized map of China compared to the globe created from old money symbols and flowers of prosperity. For the Venice Biennale, which will officially open this weekend, artist – activist Ai Weiwei has created an installation detailing his 81 days of incarceration by the Chinese government back in 2011. Entitled S.A.C.R.E.D (Supper, Accusers, Cleansing, Ritual, Entropy, and Doubt), the installation at the Sant’Antonin church feature six iron boxes that displays scenes of his captivity in the form of dioramas.
