Chinese artist & activist Ai Weiwei once again showed his acumen at utilizing social media to get his message across with the recent online craze that has been labeled by some as the “Leg Gun” meme. AWW set things off by posting a photo of himself on his Instagram account using his leg as a gun and has since posted more of himself as well as others mimicking the pose with their own variations and styles.
So what is his message? The Guardian pointed out the similarities of what he is doing with the pose seen in the Chinese ballet The Red Detachment of Women, a state sanctioned project promoted during the Cultural Revolution. This possible satire along with the recent 25 year anniversary of the Tiananmen Square Massacre may give some clues as to Ai Weiwei’s intentions…
