A couple of weeks ago Pangeaseed.org wrapped up another praiseworthy project on the island of Isla Mujeres, Mexico – Sea Walls: Murals for Oceans – Mexico Expedition. For this event that took place from July 20-28, they invited a group of international artists to help raise awareness for the conservation of the ocean. Similar to what they did with POW! WOW! Hawaii earlier this year (covered), 1xRun.com released a series of limited edition prints along with this event, with 100% of the proceeds going towards funding the programme.
Greatly needed protection for the whale sharks and manta rays off the Yucatan peninsula was the main focus of this project. The vulnerable populations of these sea giants is in great danger due to the Asian shark fin trade and the growing mega aquarium trade. The idea is to raise awareness within the local and tourist communities and highlight the benefits of ecotourism and the long-term sustainability of natural resources. In order to achieve that, Pangeaseed artists created some 15 murals around town with this idea in mind.
The lineup of artists included Curiot (top image), Saner, Nosego, Shark Toof, Tristan Eaton, Celeste Byers, Meggs, Cinzah Merkens, Tatiana Suárez, Hannah Stouffer, Smithe, Aaron Glasson, Yoh Nagao, Vexta and Pelucas. After getting the opportunity to swim with whale sharks & oceanic manta rays and experience these majestic giants in their natural environment, the artists created some fantastic ocean themed works that will stay on the island as vivid reminders of the event and its cause.
