Previews: “Ema Show” @ Hellion Gallery

On March 5th, Hellion Gallery’s Portland location will be opening a group exhibition featuring works created on small wooden plaques called “Ema” on which Shinto worshipers write their prayers or wishes. Most of the artists like Stella Im Hultberg (above) used the plaques to paint on but some went took a more novel sculptural approach. Streets: Blu (Bolivia)

It looks like Italian street savant Blu has began his swing through the Americas with a mural in Bolivia. The quickly painted wall again provides biting social commentary on the value of people in the country when weighed against the value placed on money. Next up for Blu will be work for the MANIFESTO street initiative in Mexico. Discuss Blu here.

Arguably one of the best murals created at this year’s POW! WOW! Hawaii (more coverage here) and one of the most unusual and interesting collaborations was the one by Esao Andrews and Aaron Horkey. None of the artists are really known for their mural skills or even large scale works, so it was interesting to watch their talents pulling off one of the most detailed and exceptional pieces created. This Saturday night (February 28th), Thinkspace Gallery in Culver City will be hosting new work from Sarah Joncas (seen above) and Camilla d’Errico (seen below). Both artists create portraiture centered on female characters but their imagery tends to be quite different, which will give the joint show a nice contrasting look. Joncas’ paintings have a cinematic feel to them with with a sense of danger or unknown while d’Errico’s pieces are more surreal featuring her characters with saccharine charm interacting with their creature friends. Openings: “20 Years Under the Influence of Juxtapoz” @ LAMAG

Last weekend in Los Angeles, alongside Robert Williams’ amazing new exhibition (covered), a group show celebrating 20 years of Juxtapoz also opened to the public. Curated by Andrew Hosner from Thinkspace and Gary Pressman from Copro Gallery, the showing featured artists, emerging and established, who have graced the pages of the trailblazing magazine. Streets: Reka (Rome)

James Reka was recently in Tormarancia, Rome, painting a new mural on a residential building. Entitled Natura Morta (Still Life), the finished piece is a great example of all the qualities of Reka’s work – skilled spray control that results in sharp, crispy lines and perfect shapes, a good feel for colors and use of facade color as a background, as well as neat incorporation of architectural elements in his work. Lisbon-based art platform Underdogs are continuing their program of collaborating with some of the world’s best young street and urban art talents. After recently working with Nunca on creating a mural and releasing a limited edition print (covered), they recently invited another Brazilian artist, Raphael Sagarra ‐ Finok. With his current solo show now on view at Die Kunstagentin in Cologne, Germany, Dave Kinsey (featured) is continuing to explore a more abstract body of work, which was first introduced at his Detroit solo show back in October 2014 (covered). The pieces introduced through Ashes To Ashes are hugely influenced by the very basics, the essential elements of nature – water, dirt, rock, wood. It has been four years since Chris Berens last showed solo at Roq La Rue. Nethermoor, as the show is titled, is based on Michael Ende’s book, Die Unendliche Geschichte, or as many may know it, The Neverending Story. The show opening however, wove a story all its own.
