Jonathan LeVine Projects recently closed a showing by John Jacobsmeyer, his debut solo with the Jersey City gallery. Entitled Great Feats and Defeats, the oil paintings from the New York-based artist depict a world of impossible mazes created from plywood, full struggling competitors. The pieces created on aluminum are strangely influenced by both Jacobsmeyer’s fascination with wood since childhood and from his love for gaming cultures. He explains – “If time were reversed and analog followed digital, if plywood clubhouses were made in order to bring video game narratives into the real world, how would that look? How would that story play out?”
