Last night AM attended the opening for Tomokazu Matsuyama’s (interviewed) “Glancing at Twin Peaks” (previewed) opening at Joshua Liner Gallery. The highly anticipated opening for Matzu’s NYC solo drew a packed house. Matzu’s distinctly unique pieces exhibited his signature contemporary flair on traditional subjects. This show continued his use of bold color palettes and contrasting “splashes” that make the pieces leap out at the audience. The installations amazed the audience, from a motorized spinning carousel to the stunning masterpiece that stole the show, “Wherever I am.” This massive two meter tall fiberglass sculpture and installation piece was designed, crafted and imported from Japan. The gallery was transformed into a visual buffet that showcased Matzu’s amazing talent with a little bit of everything for everyone.
The excited crowd was reluctant to leave when it came time to close. But the night continued as Joshua Liner and Matzu had a “little” special celebration at Megu in Trump Towers. Afterwards we also stopped by the Fountain Art Fair after party and ended up meeting up with Camille Rose Garcia, Adam Wallcavage, and the crews at Jonathan LeVine and David B Smith galleries.
