Second Helpings: November 2009

Fall has officially come to a close as November capped off a great start to this art season. As winter kicks off with the big art fairs, we move to recap some of the best stories of last month in another edition of Second Helpings. Get served after the jump.

Basel Week Miami ’09: Barry McGee Installation @ Deitch

Amongst the many things we’ve seen over in Miami this year, perhaps the most talked about piece of work (certainly between the AM crew and our friends out here) was an previously unsold Barry McGee’s “99 bottle” installation over at Deitch Projects booth at Art Basel. Reputed to have sold for a mere 100K at this year’s fair, it would not have been hard, just among collector friends in Miami to come up with the money and then to split the bottles up. Perhaps not […]

Basel Week Miami ’09: Faile

AM went back to Basel today to check out a few more things, one of which was the recent work that Faile has been putting together for Perry Rubenstein (seen at recent group show). A wide range and scale of work was at the booth with the focus on the new wooden block wall pieces and also the more widely seen boxes. The “puzzle-like blocks” gave the pieces a fresh new dimension with multiple sized panels making up the compositions. Take a look at our […]

Openings: Basel Week Miami 09 – Primary Flight “Blueprint for Space”

Last night, AM attended the opening for the gallery portion of Logan Hicks’ and Book’s Primary Flight. During the day, the artists had worked hard at creating murals for the largest site specific mural installation for this year’s Art Basel all over the Wynwood Art District. Artists included Augor, Bask, C215, Jim Darling, D*Face, Shepard Fairey, Meggs, Michael De Feo, Ron English, El Mac, Logan Hicks, Kenton Parker, Santiago Rubino, Retna, Reyes, Revok, Jeff Soto, Tes One, Zevs, and many more. The night was capped […]

Studio Visits/Releases: Faile – “Warriors of the Night” Print & Bronze Sculptures

Faile’s been heads-down working on some fantastic goodies that will be released TOMORROW. At Noon EST (9am PST), the collective will release some original works on paper, a new print entitled “Warriors of the Night” from their “Lost in Glimmering Shadows” series and two astounding bronze sculptures. AM visited the studio to view the goods up close and personal, and like past projects, the craftsmanship is top notch and most certainly will not disappoint. We got all the details after the jump.

Basel Week Miami ’09 – Art Basel First Look

Earlier today, Art Basel Miami held it’s media preview and AM was on hand enjoy the biggest art show in North America. Much like last year’s Basel (here), the seemingly endless columns of blue chip galleries provided a tsunami of top notch art work for all that will attend this high caliber show. We only had a few hours to run down the aisles, so enjoy this first look at the goodies. We’ll be back soon enough with an in-depth look when we take our time […]

Openings: Tristram Lansdowne “Entropical Paradise” @ LE Gallery

AM had the pleasure of attending Tristram Lansdowne’s opening of “Entropical Paradise” at Toronto’s LE Gallery. The space was filled with curious art fans looking to catch a glimpse of Tristram’s work. After our studio visit and creative process feature with the young artist, we knew that we were in for a treat. Even with high expectations, what we saw was even a bit more than we expected. Tristram’s detailed watercolors were simply outstanding, safe to say even better than pictures can convey. One of […]

Preview: “Grifters” Group Show @ Lazarides (Rathbone Place)

It appears that the preparations for Lazarides’ group show “Grifters” is already in full swing (teased). With most of the works already arriving inside the gallery, the artists got busy around the streets of London. Our friend Ian Cox went on an urban expedition with all the artists from this amazing group show including: David Choe, Vhils, Invader, Mode 2 among others for some in-progress photos of their outdoor work. His pics (see the full set here.) also gives a quick little preview of what is to be a colossal show at […]

World Tour: Japan with Nick Walker

It’s been a while since our last “World Tour” feature from Japan (here), so naturally, we were excited that Nick Walker (interviewed) dropped in on the land of the rising sun to do a little “street work” for his Japanese fans. Following up on his infamous “The Morning After” series (here and here), he visited locations in Tokyo and Osaka to do some “hits” with some long time favorites along with some new creations. In addition, he also participated in a live painting session where he […]

Preview: Sashie Masakatsu – “De Facto Standard” @ Mizuma Gallery

Masakatsu Sashie is preparing to show back at his home country of Japan at Mizuma Galley after a recent show in LA. Opening this Saturday, November 26th, the show will run until the day after Christmas. We expect his signature urban orbs floating over ominous landscapes, but as the title of the show also hints at, Sashie is not merely content with having his art meet some arbitrary “De Facto Standard.” He seeks to push his talents to another level. This latest body of work also […]
