On Friday night, AM attended the opening for Ryan McGinness’ new show at New York’s Pace Primative. As the title Geometric Primitives indicates, Ryan utilizes his signature vocabulary of graphics and applies them to the African works that are at the core of the this specific gallery. For those of you in the Washington DC area, you’re in for a special treat. Tomokazu Matsuyama (interviewed) will be opening up a solo Thousand Regards this week at the Katzen Arts Center of the American University Museum. Co-sponsored by the Japan Embassy and the Japan Foundation, this impressive exhibition is part retrospective and part new imagery. Armory Week ’12: Scope Art Fair

One of the mainstay satellite fairs during Armory Week is the Scope Art Fair. This year’s edition rocked a new location just blocks from the main Armory Art Show (here & here) and gained some fresh galleries go along with its revamped look. As with most fairs we caught works by artists from around the globe and we also ran into a few familiar faces to go along with the infusion of new blood. Check it out after the jump.

Following a successful and complex collab (here & here) with French artist JR, Liu Bolin also recently unveiled a new series of photos at Eli Klein in Soho. The much anticipated return of Liu to the Big Apple was actually to show work from the photoshoots he conducted during his 2010 trip to NYC as well as his publicized collaboration with Harper’s Bazaar and fashion icons Gaultier, Lanvin, Missoni and Valentino. Openings: Alex Gross – “Product Placement” @ Jonathan LeVine Gallery

Opening alongside Victor Castillo last month at Jonathan LeVine was Los Angeles-based artist Alex Gross (interviewed). Entitled Product Placement, the show presented a new series of paintings that expands on the themes from his prior work such as Consumption, Branding, Celebrity, Love and Mortality. Using refined strokes and techniques, Gross skillfully rendered mundane objects and mixed them into a world where luxury brands are the common focus of his alluring subjects. In October 2011, Kid Zoom (aka Ian Strange) returned to his native home Australia for a special project where he built a full scale reproduction of his childhood home at the prestigious Turbine Hall on Cockatoo Island. Following the Aussie suburban theme, Kid Zoom parks three classic Holden Commodores to round out the picturesque setting symbolizing his youth. Through this weekend, the walls at the Jonathan LeVine Gallery will be displaying the surreal paintings of Victor Castillo.
