Openings: Ryan McGinness – “Geometric Primatives” @ Pace Primative

On Friday night, AM attended the opening for Ryan McGinness’ new show at New York’s Pace Primative. As the title Geometric Primitives indicates, Ryan utilizes his signature vocabulary of graphics and applies them to the African works that are at the core of the this specific gallery. Sounds simple right? Well this knock out exhibition is definitely more than meets the eye as Mr. McGinness raided the vast archives of African tribal art at gallery for reference, then proceeded to use repeated drawings to break down each […]

Openings: Alex Gross – “Product Placement” @ Jonathan LeVine Gallery

Opening alongside Victor Castillo last month at Jonathan LeVine was Los Angeles-based artist Alex Gross (interviewed). Entitled Product Placement, the show presented a new series of paintings that expands on the themes from his prior work such as Consumption, Branding, Celebrity, Love and Mortality. Using refined strokes and techniques, Gross skillfully rendered mundane objects and mixed them into a world where luxury brands are the common focus of his alluring subjects. It’s also interesting to see the typographic examples of foreign elements in his compositions. We especially enjoyed the […]

Through this weekend, the walls at the Jonathan LeVine Gallery will be displaying the surreal paintings of Victor Castillo. AM stopped by for the opening last month as the LA-based artist presented his new body of work, entitled The Jungle, which certainly described the state of the world that the Chilean-born painter likes to portray. His paintings are a reflection of the unrest and revolution that has been seen around the globe, accentuated and contrasted even further by the child-like figures and innocence that are […]

Openings: Kris Kuksi – “Triumph” @ Joshua Liner Gallery

Last week, AM attended the much anticipated opening for Kris Kuksi’s latest body of work entitled Triumph. The solo exhibition held at New York’s Joshua Liner Gallery was his most impressive yet. Focusing on going big, Kris brought the heavy artillery as several mammoth works became the centerpieces of the night. Working on a scale that we were not accustomed to seeing, Mr. Kuski did two things that usually don’t go hand in hand – he increased the size while maintaining his meticulous standard and detailing […]

Streets: Nick Walker (Chicago)

Recently, Nick Walker (interviewed) took a little trip across the pond to Chi-town hoping to spread a little Vandal love. With the weather finally cooperating Nick packed his freshly cut stencils and hit the streets of Chicago. His goal was to go big with his infamous character on the outside of Wicker Park night spot Violet Hour. Similar to his recent murals in Paris, Nick turned this mural up a notch with not only an explosion of colors, but also with the the intensity of the […]
