Openings: Erik Foss – “Avarice” @ Mallick Williams & Co.

Mallick Williams led off the art season with solo exhibition recently with a show coinciding with the 9/11 tragedy by New York contemporary artist Erik Foss. The show entitled Avarice is a series of over 80 abstract paintings featuring challenging tha status quo notions of propriety and function between the worlds of high art and downtown culture. Openings: Meggs – “Inner Demons II” @ Backwoods Gallery

Prior to showing in San Francisco, the talented Meggs exhibited the second part of his Inner Demons exhibition at Melbourne’s Backwoods Gallery. Similar to his showing in London’s Red Bull Studios, the artist returned to his home country to display a collection of paintings, sculptures and prints utilizing his signature wild strokes & splash techniques. Seen: Agnes B – “Certain Young French Photography & Drawings” + “Holding Pattern Outpost”

AM recently stopped by Agnès B’s Howard Street flagship store to catch two special group shows exhibiting at the “Galerie Boutique”. The first was Certain Young French Photography and Drawings featuring works by Claire Adelfang, Claudia Imbert, Luna Picoli Truffaut, Marc Cellier, Nicolas Dhervillers, Matthias Olmeta, Leonard Bourgois-Beaulieu, Leionel Avignon and Kiki & Loulou Picasso. The second was Holding Pattern Outpost which showcased the winning works of MOMA PS1’s 12th Annual Young Architect’s Program. Check it out after the jump.

Openings: Ryan Heshka – “Strange Powers 2” @ Copro Gallery

Ryan Heshka recently premiered a new body of works at Los Angeles’ Copro Gallery. Presented by BLAB! The show entitled Strange Powers (part 2) is an exhibit of the self taught Canadian artist’s fun style that brings back nostalgic feelings of Sci-fi super 8 films, cell animation, pulp comics & magazines from a generation past. LA’s Mark Moore Gallery recently opened their sixth annual Ultrasonic show, surveying emerging and mid-career artists. For this installment, the gallery tapped six artists – Theodora Allen, Sebastiaan Bremer, Alika Cooper, Mark Mulroney, Okay Mountain and Andrew Schoultz – whose work falls under the theme of appropriation. AM recently caught the opening of Richard Hambleton’s A Retrospective at Phillips de Pury’s Park Avenue gallery space.
