Basel Week Miami ’11: Scope

One of the satellite fairs we attended during Art Basel Week Miami was Scope. Housing a variety of genres, we saw a healthy mix of street art, low brow and emerging contemporary art working together as gallerists brought work from artists which you may be familiar with. From OsGemeos to Roa, Ron English to Ray Caesar, Aakash Nihalani to Jenny Morgan, there seemed to be something for everyone at this fair. Check out more photos after the jump.

Openings: Brooke Dombroski @ Human Imagination

Our friends at Hawaii’s Human Imagination recently hosted an exhibition from photographer Brook Dombroski. The Oahu based designer, fashion photographer, and artist gives us a unique look though her lens of the special mix of urban & tropical lifestyle/landscapes in the island paradise. Basel Week Miami ’11: Mark Ryden x Taschen “Pinxit” Party

Last night, AM attended the release party for Mark Ryden x Taschen Books. The Basel Week event was held at the Soho House Miami and gave us a first look at their newly released book Pinxit which contains a comprehensive survey of Mr. Ryden’s illustrious 20 year career (previewed here). Mark’s peers & friends from all over the nation came in droves to help him celebrate at this great event. Check out more after the jump.

Recap: James Jean – “Rebus” Signing @ Reed Space

After sitting in with James Jean (featured) and catching his motivational talk to students at Pratt, we attended the signing for his newly released Rebus book at Reed Space. As expected, the place was packed with fans eager to get some time with the artist. As previewed, the event also launched his latest Lotus War Pyramid print. Admirably, James left no man behind as he stayed past closing to make sure his fans all got his John Hancock and doodle. Check it out after the jump.

Basel Week Miami ’11: Marco Brambilla x Ferrari “RPM” Video Party

As promised, here are photos from the Ferrari x Marco Brambilla’s party that we attended earlier this week at Art Basel Week Miami. The centerpiece was the collaborative 3-D video installation from Brambilla entitled RPM (see the video here) that entertained guests from the worlds of art, fashion, design and music. The first art fair AM hit up when we got to Miami was the main Art Basel event. Because it was the special buyer’s preview, we saw many collectors (including us) rushing to their favorite galleries for a chance to buy works from their favorite artists. Streets / Videos: VIK @ Paper Box

Our friends at Stink Grenade gives us a unique look at the female graffiti artist VIK in the footage above. Residing in Brooklyn and hailing from Warsaw, Poland, VIK is one of those rare female graffiti writers that works the streets of New York. In this video, we catch her working on the gates of the upcoming space for Paper Box in Brooklyn. Using her bright signature writing style she shows us how she gets up in the video.

Talks: James Jean Talk @ Pratt Institute

Before his recent book signing in in New York’s Reed Space, AM sat in on a special talk that James Jean (featured) conducted at New York’s Pratt Institute. James spoke to a packed hall of art students eager learn from the accomplished artist. Last Friday night, the Above Second Gallery in Hong Kong hosted Arrested Motion’s first curatorial project, East West Connect, with a lineup that represented the diverse selection of art we love and cover for you every day.
