World Tour – Completing the Gagosian Gallery x Damien Hirst Spot Challenge

227 hours – That’s how long it took for AM to travel the globe and complete the Spot Challenge presented by Damien Hirst x Gagosian Gallery. As we broke the news about this unique promotion, we thought, “why don’t we take Damien up on his challenge instead of just reporting on it?” Some of us have long been fans of Mr. Hirst’s spot paintings, so pair that with the opportunity to visit eight awesome cities (Geneva, Paris, London, Rome, Athens, New York, Los Angeles and Hong Kong) and […]

Showing: Ai Weiwei – “absent” @ Taipei Fine Arts Museum (Part III)

Wrapping up the third and final part (see Part I and Part II) of our look at Ai Weiwei’s comprehensive retrospective at the Taipei Fine Arts Museum (TFAM), we bring you a robust collection of photographs taken by the artist in the 1980s (split into two periods – New York and Beijing East Village). In the first series of photos, we see the “old New York” from the view point of a fresh Chinese immigrant including the social unrest & riots of the time. The second series […]

Openings: Frank Stella – “Geometric Variations” @ Paul Kasmin

Earlier this past fall Paul Kasmin gallery hosted an exhibition featuring the works of contemporary art luminary Frank Stella. The solo show entitled Geometric Variations gave us a look at the colorful works and the iconic squares that helped define part of Stella’s reputation. Unfortunately, the showing has closed already but you can check out some of our photos after the jump…

Openings: Wooster Collective & Natalia Fabia @ Jonathan LeVine

Last weekend, the Jonathan LeVine Gallery kicked off the new year with two fresh shows. First was an exhibition curated by one of our favorite street art blogs – the Wooster Collective. Entitled Hybrid Thinking, the group show featured great works from DAL, Herakut, HYURO, ROA, SIT and VINZ. The other room showcased paintings from LA-based artist Natalia Fabia (interviewed) with a solo entitled Punk Rock Rainbow Sparkle. For this new body of work, Natalia focused her considerable talents on the subjects of raw punk […]

Openings: Damien Hirst – “The Complete Spot Paintings 1986–2011” @ The Gagosian (Athens)

Moving to the next stop in our tour of Damien Hirst’s iconic work in his The Complete Spot Paintings 1986–2011 retrospective occurring across the globe at all branches of the  Gagosian, we turn out eyes to Athens. In contrast to the vast Beverly Hill space, the smaller Greek outpost gave us an intimate look at the YBA’s well recognized dotted paintings. More after the jump.

Openings: Futura 2000 – “Expansions” @ Galerie Jerome de Noirmont (Paris)

Last night, AM was invited for a early viewing of Futura’s show at Jerome de Noirmont in Paris. The exhibition entitled Expansions was a fresh collection of works created by the New York graffiti legend. Getting to see the paintings up close gave us a deeper appreciation of the details layered in by the Brooklyn-based artist. This strong new series of works on canvas contained a next level of abstraction & colors mixed with his minimalist spray paint techniques which reflected a evolution of over three […]

Openings: Sam Gibbons – “Directed By Kilroy” @ Jonathan LeVine

Opening recently alongside Stephan Doitschinoff at Jonathan LeVine Gallery was Baltimore-based artist Sam Gibbons. In his first solo exhibition with the gallery, the artist unveiled his latest show Directed by Kilroy, a series of paintings on custom cut wood panels shaped in the silhouette of his subjects. Utilizing bold colors along with exaggerated & elastic forms, he explores the themes of morality and carnal desire. It’s interesting how his works reminds us of our favorite childhood characters growing up, yet on the flipside also gets his notions […]

Video: JR x Massive Attack – “Encrages” @ Galerie Perrotin

Remember when renowned photographer JR (featured) recently returned to his home country of France for a solo exhibition entitled Encrages at Galerie Perrotin. The fresh show took over the spacious two story Paris gallery as well as utilized the ample outdoor area with his signature large-scale wheatpasting. During the opening night, we also showed you the pics from the surprise visit by Massive Attack and a short video of their live performance. Now, check out the official video JR just sent to us of that event. Discuss this show here. Discuss […]

Openings: Stephan Doitschinoff – Novo Asceticismo @ Jonathan LeVine

It’s been a while since we caught up with Stephan Doitschinoff (aka Calma). The Brazilian artist last showed with Jonathan Levine Gallery back in 2008 (covered) but now is back with a new series entitled Novo Asceticismo, which hits religious themes via mixed-media works rich in symbolism and highlighted by Latin text. Doitschinoff reflects on the sacrifice and deprivation necessary for the modern man to continue and live purely despite a society filled with vices and common mental traps. Check out more after the jump.

Openings: Massimo Vitali @ agnès b. Galerie Boutique

AM recently stopped by the agnès b. gallery boutique to catch their latest exhibition with esteemed Italian photographer Massimo Vitali. The opening reception allowed guests to peruse a new series of photographs taken in Italy, Turkey and Greece from 2009-2011. Making use of his signature style, Massimo took the photos from a high vantage point (4-5 meters) using large format film cameras to achieve his unique look at beach and tourist landscapes. The launch event was also a tandem book signing event in which Massimo […]
