Ryan McGinness – “Black Holes” Party @ Phillips de Pury

AM attended a special party at Phillips de Pury for Ryan McGinness’ Black Holes” exhibition last Friday night. After bringing you an indoor and outdoor view of this mind altering installation, it seemed only natural that McGinness Studios hosts an event that incorporates the human element into the already impressive show. Invitees were reminded to dress in white/bright clothing in order to interact with the black-lit backdrop. Ryan and team took it up a notch as they silkscreened their jumpsuits with their signature imagery and […]

Openings: George Condo – “Mental States” @ New Museum

On Tuesday night AM attended the private opening of Mental States at the New Museum in New York. The exhibition is the first major US survey of works by George Condo with a over 80 paintings and sculptures spanning 1982 to current day by the adventurous and imaginative artist. Utilizing two floors of the spacious museum, Condo’s work was separated into multiple areas. The third floor had three galleries of paintings; each room represented and reflected a particular “mental state” of the artist. There was […]

Streets: ROA (New York)

Right after AM came back from Basel Week, we were visited by Belgium street artist ROA with whom we promptly hit the streets of New York with, specifically in Brooklyn. Initially, he focused his efforts in Factory Fresh’s neigborhood of Bushwick where he created some amazing works. Later in the week, we visited the industrial neighborhood of Gowanus and it’s wonderful graffiti adorned canal to scout out a few locations for some possible future urban beautifications. It was very enlightening expedition for us as we braved […]

Banksy’s “Exit Through The Gift Shop” Oscar Nominated

It’s been months of buzz and speculation since the Exit Through The Gift Shop documentary made the 15 movie long-list for this year’s Oscars. Well, the Academy just announced the final five films for the category of Best Documentary and AM favorite Banksy got the nod for the groundbreaking “Street Art Disaster Film.” Even with nominations already announce from BAFTA, BFCA, Spirit Award & Cinema Eye Honors (Full award list here), we didn’t want to jinx this high profile nomination by saying anything. Now we can […]

Details: KAWS x The Standard Light Bulb Set

We’re suckers for a great idea and also impatient when it comes to waiting for the delivery guys. So after posting about the KAWS x Standard Light Bulb Set, we headed to The Standard NY to cop this hot collaboration. Upon arrival, we were excited to see the shop already had the bulbs nicely installed. Even in the daylight the glowing XX’s were apparent from the dangled housing. The boxes were cleanly packaged and reminded us of our first fresh box of KK’s! Like all […]

Openings: Ray Caesar – “A Gentle Kind of Cruelty” @ Jonathan LeVine Gallery

Last night, Toronto-based artist Ray Caesar’s “A Gentle Kind of Cruelty” premiered in New York at the Jonathan LeVine Gallery. This new body of work, which seems to have a more personal meaning this time around, features Caesar’s signature use of 3D modeling and animation programs where he painstakingly builds up his porcelain-skinned female characters and stages them in detailed environments.  The resulting snapshots are then released as on-offs or multiples that as you will see from the photos are breathtakingly elaborate and imaginative. More […]

But lucky for you, AM ran down the delivery man in order to provide a detailed look into the “Distorted Companion” figures (previewed). These jaw-dropping works blend KAWS’ iconic Companion with Lazzarini’s signature distortion treatment. The three figures were released each in three different colors: brown, gray, and black. Also, each Companion received a unique mold to […]

Showing: Patrick Hughes – “Perspective & Perception” @ Flowers Gallery

AM made a special visit to Flowers Gallery to catch the show Perspective & Perception show by Patrick Hughes. The British surrealist painter is someone that has fascinated us for years, but it’s hard to put into words why (we’ll try), as his paintings are something that should really be seen in person to appreciate. Patrick utilizes a technique called “reverspective“, where he literally builds his three-dimensional paintings from the ground up before he paints on them. Utilizing the physical depth created to accentuate the […]
