Studio Visits / Previews: Shepard Fairey – “Printed Matters” @ Subliminal Projects

AM recently stopped by Shepard Fairey’s (featured) secret secondary studio where much of his “fine art” is actually made. Officially called “Studio Number Two”, the hidden industrial space houses the heavy lumber for his coming show “Printed Matters” at Subliminal Projects. After the sold out show at Deitch Projects, Shep decided to create a body of work based on his signature silkscreening technique. Utilizing mediums of metal, wood and hand painted multiples (HPMs), he and his talented crew took the entire summer building up the […]

Openings: Dave Kinsey – “New Works” @ Joshua Liner Gallery

On Thursday night, AM attended the much anticipated opening of Dave Kinsey’s solo exhibition at Joshua Liner Gallery. This being the largest body of works which Dave has created to date, it encompassed both rooms of JLG’s Chelsea gallery space – space well spent as Kinsey’s latest batch of artistic goodness entranced the audience with his signature style, mix of colors, textures and striking compositions. Aside from the consistent quality we have come to expect in this body of work which we previewed in our […]

Openings: Ron English – “Status Factory” @ Opera Gallery

Last night, AM attended the private viewing of Ron English (featured), latest exhibition “Status Factory”. With the sponsorship of Opera Gallery, the pop-up exhibition was held in an extravagant triplex retail space in the heart of New York’s Soho district. As we showed you in the setup, the location was transformed by Ron & gang over the course of a week to give the audience the full experience of “Popaganda“. The artwork seemed bigger in person than our preview indicated, especially in rooms with interactive sculptures […]

Openings: Yoshitomo Nara – “Nobody’s Fool” Retrospective @ Asia Society

Yesterday, AM attended the opening of Yoshitomo Nara’s epic retrospective at New York’s Asia Society. With anticipation building since attending his “Open Studio” session a few weeks prior, we didn’t know what more to expect from Nara and YNG/graf aside from the artwork being created by the artist and the cool construction of the “Home” installation. After checking out opening night though, it’s pretty obvious the expansive & comprehensive retrospective put together by curators Miwako Tezuka & Melissa Chiu will delight fans old and new. […]

AM stopped by the massive three story retail space that will be the site for the extravagant “Status Factory” and took a look around at the setup. Ron and his crew have been literally working on hands and knees since last week to renovate this space and make it into their own little amusement park […]

Previews: Esao Andrews – “Solid Void” @ Jonathan Levine Gallery

Better make plans to stop by Jonathan Levine Gallery this Saturday. Esao Andrews will open his latest solo show, “Solid Void”, along with peer Alex Gross (interviewed) and his solo show. The darkly imaginative artist continues to explore the confines of his talented imagination. His use of colors to compliment his ultra fine brush work is something that has to be seen in person. After his last sold out show at JLG a few years ago and his most recent show at Thinkspace last year, […]

Studio Visits / Previews: Yoskay Yamamoto @ Roq La Rue

Earlier this summer, AM stopped by Yoskay Yamamoto’s (interviewed) Downtown LA studio to catch up with the ever busy artist. We gave you a glimpse of the time we spent there previously when we caught the man neck deep in preparation for his show at Roq La Rue. With the exhibition coming up this weekend, we thought it would be an excellent time to give you the entire studio visit / preview images for this new body of work consisting of paintings on paper (we […]

Creative Process: Takashi Murakami – Kaikai & Kiki Concept for Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade

A couple days ago, we shared with you the concept sketch of Takashi Murakami’s float contributions for this year’s Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. With Kaikai and Kiki set to take flight down 34th street this fall, we thought it would be nice to give you a look at the creative process for getting these two characters from Superflat icons to real life floats. Lots of work went into getting the actual proposal to the Macy’s parade committee, from the initial 2-D sketch to the clay molding figures […]

Studio Visits / Preview: Dave Kinsey – “New Works” @ Joshua Liner Gallery

Sometimes, you just need to get away from it all. That’s exactly what Dave Kinsey did for his upcoming show at New York’s Joshua Liner Gallery by moving up to Central California’s Three Rivers and focusing his energy into this fresh body of work. The head of Blk/Mrkt took his game to nature’s back yard, retreating from his urban studio in Los Angeles and from what we see, it’s given this new collection of paintings a whole new dimension. AM brings you an inside look into Mr. Kinsey’s […]
