During the craziness that was Art Basel Hong Kong, one of the events we attended was How & Nosm’s debut & celebration of their Sake Art Bottle at HK’s Yardbird as well as the unveiling of two site specific murals. As previewed, this unique collaboration project fused the restaurant’s artist sake line with the iconic color & styling of the German born twins. During AM‘s recent trip we stopped by the streets of Shanghai to participate in the phenomenon that is the Inside / Out photobooth truck. Next to follow that up, we stopped by Magda Danysz to catch JR’s (interviewed) latest show. While in town Basel Week Hong Kong, we made sure to stop by the local branch of Galerie Perrotin to take in the work of Ryan McGinley. Vertical Color of Sound is a nice introduction of the New York-based artist to fans in Asia as it features a election of his different series of work. Included are large-scale photographs of his signature summer road trip with friends, his use of fireworks, and his look at night skies. Discuss Ryan McGinley here.

Openings: D*Face – “Honestly Dishonest” @ Above Second

During Basel HK week, another major show we hit was from British artist D*Face (interviewed) at Hong Kong’s Above Second Gallery. Presented by Coates & Scarry, the solo entitled Honestly Dishonest featured 18 fresh works focusing on society’s increasing appetite for information. D put together layers of the commercial output which bombard our minds on a daily basis, creating something new and different in and of itself. The sold out show was filled with Basel week attendees and fans. Next, we’ll bring you some of the outdoor murals he created while he was in town. Discuss D*Face here.

JR’s (interviewed) has been very busy the past few weeks setting up a museum exhibition, gallery show and bringing his signature Inside / Out truck to China. Continuing on its North American tour, Ai WeiWei’s traveling exhibition According to What? recently opened at the Brooklyn Museum. The show consists of more than 40 works, including large scale installations, photography and sculpture, which together portray Ai’s range as artist and activist.
