Studio Visits: Hiro Kurata

We recently stopped by Hiro Kurata’s studio in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, to get a sneak peak of what he’s been working on for his upcoming two-person show with Tat Ito (featured), entitled “From Kojiki To Modern Heroism,” which opens February 13 at Joshua Liner Gallery. Mike Weiss Gallery in Chlesea recently opened an interesting show by young German artist Stefanie Gutheil. The exhibition is entitled “Kopftheater”, which translates to “Theater of the mind” and is a fitting description of the strange and imaginative worlds portrayed in Gutheil’s paintings. The press release name-drops 15th and 16th-century Dutch painters Hieronymus Bosch and Pieter Bruegel as influences, but we think that her creatures remind us a lot of Tim Burton’s Beetlejuice. Today at 2:00pm Eastern, affordable art-edition purveyor 20×200 will be releasing a set of Valentine’s Day inspired prints by one of our favorite photographer/artists, Kent Rogowski. Events: ESPO’s Love Letter Tattoo Shop

Would you like to receive a permanent love letter from ESPO? If so, you’re in luck. In celebration of the release of a book documenting his public art project Love Letter in Philadelphia, the infamous Steve Powers will be taking over a tattoo shop for a week in early February and having the artists there only ink his art. An exhibition of new work by Brooklyn-based artist Eddie Martinez recently opened at Chelsea’s ZieherSmith Gallery. From small works on paper to large mixed media canvases, Martinez paints with a expressive and energetic style, creating chaotic compositions often featuring cartoonish characters. AM visited the Raandesk Gallery for the opening of a great show featuring two talented emerging artists, Kevin Cyr and Jason Bryant (previewed).
