POW! WOW! / SXSW ’16: Recap

Earlier this month, the POW! WOW! crew spent a second year (see 2015) at SXSW painting murals for festival goers to enjoy. The roster this year included artists like Esao Andrews, Fafi, Jasper Wong, Jeffrey Gress, Kamea Hadar and Madsteez as well as local muralists like Dave Lowell, Eleanor “Niz” Herasimchuk, Jason Eatherly (seen above), Scott Tarbox, and Wade “Fish” Thompson, See some of what they painted below… Photo credit: Jasper Wong.                  

Releases: Supreme x Urs Fischer Skateboard Decks

Supreme recently announced their latest artist collaboration project with none other than famed sculptor Urs Fischer. The Swiss-born artist has elected to use the image of a cigarette, in various states of use, for the latest installment of the streetwear brand’s longstanding artist deck series. This isn’t the first time Fischer has chosen this subject for his art and speaks to his focus on everyday objects and the effects of time. Showing: Ryan McGinness – “#metadata” @ Kohn Gallery

Last weekend in Los Angeles, Kohn Gallery hosted the opening of Ryan McGinness second solo with them with a new body of work entitled #metadata. With this new showing, the New York-based artist presented a interesting installation featuring his distance imagery as well as two new series of works –  Studio Views and Screen Combines. Streets: World Roundup (Jan 19 – Feb 20)

It’s time we do another summary of public art from around the globe with another Street World Roundup feature. Leading things off is an impressive new anamorphic mural from eL Seed that covers almost 50 buildings in the neighborhood of Manshiyat Nasr in Cairo, Egypt. Art Focus: Ben Tolman

This week’s Art Focus highlights the meticulously detailed drawings of Ben Tolman and his surreal imagery. In some of his work (seen above), the Washington DC-based artist builds urban environments with a god-like eye as the viewer is able to take in the scene from a distance. More recently, he has been rendering some smaller, more abstract pieces that take things into the more improbable realm (seen below). Releases: Audrey Kawasaki – “Dreaming of Koholint Island” Print

On March 26, Audrey Kawasaki (interviewed) will be releasing a new print entitled Dreaming of Koholint Island. The image is taken from the painting the locally-based artist contributed to the current 30th anniversary Legend of Zelda group show (covered) in Los Angeles. Starting at 12 noon PST, 250 of these prints will go on sale for $140 unframed and $290 framed, but head over here for more details if you are interested in adding one to your collection. The newly formed Millennium Iconoclast Museum of Art in Brussels will be opening their doors on March 24th (opening postponed to 13th of April at 11 am due to the terrible recent events in Brussels), with an inaugural show entitled City Lights. Releases: James Jean – “Kali” Print

On March 23rd, James Jean (interviewed) will be releasing a new time-limited print (starting 8:00 AM PDT and available for 12 hours only) through his webstore entitled Kali. The image is taken from one of his paintings for his show in Tokyo last year (covered) and features the Japan-based artist’s surreal take on the Hindu goddess of empowerment. Releases: Tracey Emin x Stephen Webster Jewelry Line

Earlier this year, Tracey Emin collaborated with her long time friend and jewellery designer Stephen Webster on a new line of wearable art. The 50-piece collection entitled I Promise To Love You is inspired by the British artist’s signature neon art and her sketches of woodland animals of which she states – “I chose the woodland creatures as I wanted to work with the idea of English animals.
